a Glass Floor Underfoot - 2. Grizzled flame-licks

.

Drama

Fritz Koffka gewidmet

1.

Da starke Stimmen schollen, da Gestalten

Ihr Haar zerreißend vor dem Gott sich wanden

Da grelle Flammen durch die Tempel stürmten,

Deren erzene Weihetafeln schmolzen:

Sahen wir um, ob noch der Himmel drehe

Die gestirnte Küppel liber den Höfen:

Riesenarme stießen in die Nacht,

Die dumpf hinbrauste, mächtig, über der Stadt. [i]

Drama

Fritz Koffka bestowed

1.

As heavy voices rose, and while the actors

Began tearing hair ‘fore a weighty god’s frown,

Grizzled flame-licks tore through the temple-rafters,

Where the pitiless bronze tablets melted down:

We looked to see if the sky turned in its height

Still around the courtyard from a starry crown:

The arms of giants thrust into the midnight

To roar with a dull power over the town.

Although, there were eight poems in the original publication between your first posting and this, it seems to me they go together well - the emotional frustration in the former leading to the emotional explosion in the second (and third).

Thank you, Jon. I suppose you are referring to the complete works of Robert Jentzsch's poetry from which I sourced my selections to translate. It's true, I did not elect to translate everything, and in fact made a rather personal gathering. First and foremost, I looked for poems that spoke about same-sex love, and then I went for other poems that seem striking examples of Expressionistic style. There is a lot in Jentzsch's "Drama" collection suggesting both of these to me :)

Thanks again for reading and sharing your thoughts
