a Glass Floor Underfoot - 26. you are me

.

Romantiker-Bildnisse

Herrn John Höxter gewidmet

8.

Ein Tier, das manchmal brüllt und manchmal lockt

Das durch die Straßen wackelt, wie der blinde

Zufall es wälzt . . . bist du mir. Weiter nichts.

Nun sage, lieber Freund, was uns verbinde?

Nacht peitscht mit Wolken tot der Sterne Licht,

Ihr Hochmeer reibt den Rand der Häuser krumm;

Ich – wenn der Sturm wie Orgelbrausen wächst –

Bin Höhle, welche dumpf ihm wiederdröhnt.

Romantic Portraits

Mister John Höxter bestowed

8.

A beast that must sometimes roar, and sometimes cluck,

To attract as it shimmies along the street,

Like blind luck had it rolled . . . For you are me.

Nothing more. So say, dear friend, what binds us so?

But when night’s whipped by clouds dead of the stars’ light,

High seas rub the edge of canted houses;

I – when the storm booms like an organ chord –

Am his lair, calling him softly once more.

Quite a picture is painted here. I think this one took some time to fetch the meaning from the lines.

I found your choice of words to be intriguing at times.

And as always, I like your choice of the work of art to go with it :)

Thanks for reading and commenting, BackwoodsBoy. I can still remember the moment I realized he was talking about the storm having the sound of a pipe organ. It's awesome poetry

It is awesome, indeed.  I always wonder if others see the same picture that I do.  My one-word thought when I had read it several times was "lifeline".  Sort of goes with the nautical background.

I love the imagery in this poem. I can hear the surf and feel the warmth and comfort of being the lair, the den, for another.

Thanks, Parker. The imagery and intent of the first stanza also fascinate me. The you are me/ we are alike is something quite familiar to those of us meeting another Gay person in a public place. The recognition doesn't actually need any words; it's just there
