The Ultimate Vehicle of Earthly Bliss - 12. The Two Sapphic Odes

.

Sapphische Oden

I.

Fremdes Mädchen willst du vorübergehen?

Schicksal, schien mir, liege in deinen Blicken

The Two Sapphic Odes

I.

Unknown maiden, did you intend to pass by?

What darts in your furtive gaze seemed Fate to me,

But your steps, as if angry with all my looks,

Flee to distance themselves.

Much pent up ire may stride latent in the loins,

And oh, how I could love a languishing soul,

A soul that pines away through its very Pride –

One’s Pride is one’s longing.

For however quickly you may have passed by,

It was my smile that greeted your scornful gaze,

My smile that reached out and courted your passions –

Thus, you stopped and turned back.

You stood there, not justly knowing what to say –

Perhaps you wondered if desire had called –

Hesitating hopelessly, you ask shyly:

Are you not she, Sappho?

Fascinating.  My mind visualized almost too many scenarios to immediately process.

The second stanza delighted me; I found so many images and connections in it. Yet it was the third which made me pause and smile. This is a beautiful, beautiful poem. Thank you for allowing us to share in it.

Thanks, ReaderPaul. These are very sensual poems, and a part of sensuality is fear

Thanks for reading, Parker. These two odes (the other one to follow shortly) are very near the core of who Toni Schwabe was as a poet
