The Ultimate Vehicle of Earthly Bliss - 19. Future memories

.

Sonett IV.

Dann kam die müde, letzte Stunde.

Ich schloß die Augen zu vor dir

Und hing nur wild an deinem Munde

Und spürte wie das Leben mir

Mit jeder wechselnden Sekunde

Versickerte, als ob du mir

Um Herzen kußtest eine Wunde.

Der Abend kam herein. Doch wir

Wußten nur unser letztes Schweigen.

Und die Erinnerungen schlangen

Um uns seltsame Totenreigen.

Da bist du endlich fortgegangen –

Wie einer, dem nichts mehr zu eigen –

Dir folgte lautlos mein Verlangen. [i]

Sonnet IV.

Then came the exhausted, final hour.

I closed my eyes to you and clung

Wildly upon your mouth, feeling

How quick life sped away from me

And sped with every changing second

As if your kisses were around

A stigmata opening in my heart.

The evening settled. And yet we

Only savored our parting silence.

For the future memories then snaked

A strange dance of mortality.

Then at last, when you went away, I –

Like one who has nothing else to lose –

Felt my mute wants trail after you.

What powerful words, full of so much meaning.

Thanks, Chis. The woman who inspired Toni to write these four Sonnets must have been everything to her

One can feel the emotions in the work.

Thank you, ReaderPaul. Schwabe speaks across time - all times and circumstance - and I'm happy to bring her to a wider audience
