The Ultimate Vehicle of Earthly Bliss - 16. What am I to you?

.

Sonette

Sonett I.

Ich lief von dir – zerrissen durch ein Wort,

Das mich aus deiner Zartlichkeit verstieß.

Ich sah mich nicht mehr um – Es blies

Ein heftig raucher Wind all meinen Kummer fort.

Was bin ich dir – du mir? Es ist kein Ort,

Wo meine Liebe ruhen darf.

The Four Sonnets

Sonnet I.

So I ran from you – shredded by a word

That exiled me from your tenderest care.

So I stopped looking around me – while

A fierce, smoke-filled wind blew my sorrows far away.

Thus what am I to you – or you to me?

There’s no place for my love to rest. No one

To invite me to their paradise.

I set sail with a thousand ships – but found no docks.

I fled – but you set out after me.

And where the cherry blossoms grasped my hand

You caught up and took me once again.

We strolled shyly through a night-bound landscape –

And my desire, stronger than the tempest,

Suddenly wrapped you up within my coat.

I can identify with the first two stanzas; there is unquestionably a deep yearning for safe harbor. So too might one yearn for the close-together stroll in the last two stanzas. Taken together, these are stunning.

I think you are right, Parker. "A place for my love to rest" is a deep-seated wish most LGB and questioning youth can relate to. We all long for that coat broad enough to shelter two from the world's mean tempests.

And --

We strolled shyly through a night-bound landscape –
And my desire, stronger than the tempest,

Meaningful imagery, indeed!  Thank you, @AC Benus

Thanks, ReaderPaul. I agree with you in admiring Toni Schwabe's amazing ability to paint sweeping land- (and emotional) scapes with just the lightest touch of her brush. I find her work very inspiring as a poet
