Dear Comicality - 1. Letter to a Friend

Dear Comicality,

I miss you, my friend. We had been penpals for twenty-six years when you passed. You were only two years older than me, and I certainly wasn’t expecting you to leave this journey so early.

In 1998, I was still dealing with my sexuality, and I lived vicariously through the stories on Nifty. I discovered the archive in 1994 or so and was still checking it every day at the time when I spotted New Kid in School in the High School section. It definitely struck a chord so I reached out to you. And kept right on following.

Eventually, when I started Gay Authors, you were the very first author I got signed up. For those first nine years, I handled your website and posting all your stories. When we switched to our custom Story Archive software, I kept right on posting your stuff for you. I did so for as long as you had that WebTV. After you finally got a laptop, you started posting your own stories.

You just poured your life and passion into your writing. Whether that was your stories, or the articles you wrote for our Writer’s Blog, or your own e-magazine. You just kept churning out stuff people wanted to read.

As I write this, you’ve been gone from us for a year. We wanted to honor your touching of our lives through your writing with a small anthology to celebrate what would have been your 50th birthday.

I deeply hope you have found the peace that often eluded you in life. I will do my best to make sure your writings live on to touch new generations of people growing into their own. May you always be a beacon in the darkness to those just trying to figure things out.

With love always,

Myr

I know I am a little late reading this but I just found it and this was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in a letter to a true and dear friend and we all here are so thankful you got Comsie on GA. He was a true friend to a lot of people. I use to read his stories on nifty and sent him a email telling him he was a talented author and he sent me a email back asking me if I wanted to be put on his mailing list and I said yes. Then one day I thought, why not just join GA and read his stories on here so here I am thanks to Comsie. The members on here are all very nice and the authors are all very talented. You have a fantastic website here and we all thank you for creating it. I have been a member since Oct 2020 now and have enjoyed myself on here. Comsie will be missed so very much and if his special friends on here knows me then they will understand what I am about to say! The Queen misses The King so very much and hope you are writing more stories for the readers up in Heaven!

This reminds me why I avoid threads outside of the ones I am sort of expected to be productive in. 🥲 It's now July and this still knocks the wind out of my sails.

Comicality gave "86% in creating new content and 14%" in finishing that work. That was something we used to joke about, among other things while entertaining ourselves in our back-and-forth banter over the years. I've never seen anyone with as much drive to want the world around himself to feel loved as much as he always has. He took abuse from many "haters" online to simply make us as an online family feel cared about. I'm 100% public online with much of what I've done over the years because of him. And that's no exaggeration. Especially now.

Your letter made me tear up as I've heard so many recall how they knew the man, how they found his work, how they appreciated him... and they all have one major thing in common, gratitude. What he created with his storytelling doesn't resonate with everyone, but when it does, it resonates loudly and produces a huge amount of gratitude for the messages he put out there. For me I know the hurt of losing the man I considered family won't fade. He started out small and doing his own thing and finished up with legend cred... while still doing his own thing. We should all have that on our resume, right?

I miss him too and it does help to know I'm not alone in that. When my life is tough and I have an IM launch date approaching, I still on some days just can not simply sit down and work on the site, because it reminds me that he's gone. I sometimes wish that wasn't the case but also sometimes hope it never fades. Confusing as that can be to deal with it.

::HUGZ:: Thanks for sharing your message Myr, it's a testament to why he remained so steadfastly loyal to you and the community you created. He appreciated his online family and was very free in sharing that as well. I know for a fact you wer very high on that list for him 💜 I'm not going to thank you for making me weepy again, though. Totally unfair, lol!

I really need to switch gears or else I'm not going to get anything done at all today ;)
