The Art of Living

   (6 reviews)

When artist and illustrator Louis leaves London and moves to his late uncle’s house in Northamptonshire, his intention is to simplify his life.  He didn’t expect a cute painter and his toxic aunt, a burned-out ex who comes to visit but stays, and a grumpy gay policeman, not to mention men from his uncle’s dodgy past who seem to have criminal intentions and an obsession with an ancient artefact.

This story involves several different threads which (I hope) will come together in satisfying and not necessarily obvious ways.  The story moves between Louis’s first-person narrative and third-person for the other characters.
After completing the first draft of the story, I realised that it contained several themes which may be recognisable to those who know my other stories.  These links were not deliberate; it’s just the way my brain works.

Truly another wonder addition to the world of @Robert Hugill that he has created for us.

With the exception of one of two minor characters these are all new to us; but it doesn't take but a moment to find the charming, maddening, or downright detestable.  But we can't wait to see what they do next.

As always, the writing is first rate, and the flow to the story is damn near perfect.

We have romance, shady past, coming out, new loves, and a mystery and some delightful police officers to keep us on our toes.

Pull up a rocker, a lovely tea, perhaps a scone or two; and enjoy this story like you have all his others.

I cannot praise this story enough. My fellow Hugillites who have already reviewed it, have done a fine job in doing so. The only thing I can really add is that this story, like many of Robert's other stories, included some most amusing Hugillisms and a character named Eileen, who uses the "brown word" as an adjective to describe just about anything in preference to using "fucking". She is a hoot.

Read it and guffaw.

Another excellent read from Robert Hugill, this time with a touch of crimes and a few murders.  As usual, the characterisation is superb and it is a delight to see not just our hero, Louis, developing as an artist (and how!), but also to see depth added to the rest of the cast.  All this written in exquisite English and with lashings of humour.

First class.
