Light & Dragonflies: Nature Poems/Love Poems - 21. Garbled kisses

.

Schluchzen rinnt in deiner Haare Bett

Hände stammeln

Blut frißt in die Adern

Atem hängt an deines Lachens Blüte

bange weint sein Flügelschlag

Trennung schlägt

verstümmelt bluten Küsse

langsam

wächst

der Tränen Nacht

dir

über beide Augen

 ---------------------------------

Sobbing runs through the bed of your hair

while hands stammer

and blood eats through our veins

Breath dangles from the bloom of your nervous laugh

its wings cry in sorrow with

parting’s beat

as garbled kisses hemorrhage

slowly

growing

through the tearful night

you

brush over each eye

Chapter Comments

Runge made this a most active poem, and your translation captures that. Breath dangling, hands stammering, and wings crying - none of these would move in the minds eye, yet they do because of the words used to depict their agitated state. Kisses hemorrhage, and the tender brush over eyelids closes them in what appears to be a final journey. It’s masterful.
