Guero - 2. The Cowardly Lion Part 1

This is the first chapter of a pair that are related. The next part will post tomorrow.

The Cowardly Lion Part 1

I was sitting on the couch, with Guero on my lap as I absently stroked his back. With my mind preoccupied with the tv show I was watching that day, I failed to notice how agitated Guero was.

It was when Guero stopped purring, that I finally looked down, and saw how tense he was, how his ears twitched every now and then. I was worried, and I held him tightly, to sooth him, still… he looked tense. So, with a kiss on his head, I set him aside and got up, and headed to the kitchen for a snack.

All thoughts of a snack were forgotten, as I looked through the kitchen window and saw the source of Guero’s distress- beyond the kitchen window storm clouds were gathering and I could hear the far-off thunder, each clap getting louder as the clouds drew nearer. And then, a loud boom reverberated throughout the house, the storm was now on top of us.

I went back to the living room, but I did not find Guero on the couch where I left him. I knelt down to see if he was under the furniture… he was nowhere in sight.

I got back onto my feet and left the room as another thunder clap boomed outside. When I was in the hall, inspiration struck, I realized where Guero had hidden away, and I dashed to my parents’ bedroom, and when I entered the empty room, I saw the walk-in closet door ajar.

I reached forward and opened it wide, and I saw Guero in the corner, huddled and shaking. My heart went out to him. I closed the door behind me, flicked on the closet light, and sat before Guero. And, I began stroking his fur, as I waited with him for this storm to pass.

And after the rumbling of the thunder began to wane, I felt another rumbling beneath my fingers… Guero was purring again.

Quick note: at the time, I was alone in the house, my siblings were off hanging out with their friends, my father was at work, and my mother was running errands.

Awww... you tugged at my heartstrings, Drew. I had an apartment cat years ago that used to hide in the kitchen under the sink during storms. She could hook her paw under the door and open it, and it would swing closed behind her. You made me remember that and her, so thank you. Well presented and well written, buddy... I look forward to more :D  Cheers... Gary....

Drew, This is a wonderful view into your feelings and the care you felt for the new member of the family.  Anyone that puts the care of a pet that high deserves recognition and praise, so.....   Drew hold your head high and be proud of your actions.  Great Job my friend :) .

We didn't have many thunderstorms where I grew up but we had enough events when fireworks are used :) I remember being in several such situations with Cherry. Again, thanks for bringing back memories Drewbear :kiss:. What I don't get is, why weren't you afraid of thunder :P .

Another wonderful and sweet memory Drew. Great details taking us right there with you.

My dog used to pace during thunderstorms and hide when there were fireworks.

Aw! Guero did something similar, my closet has bi-fold doors, so he learned to open them by pulling on them.

Thanks Gary! :glomp:

Thanks mama. On the details, I'm still amazed I could pack a lot in so few words, so it is encouraging to hear you liked them.

It sounds like you and Guero were comforting each other through that storm. A true friendship and another wonderful memory. Thank you for sharing this Drew.

We were. He was like my security blanket whenever I was upset, feeling sad, or just needed quiet company.

Sorry for just now getting here, drew. This is a sweet memory. I love that you got inside the closet with Guero to show him you would ride out the storm together. I'm sure it strengthened the bond already formed between you two.
