Chapter 02

Kenny

I was driving on my way home after attending a company party. It was very late and I was so heartbroken after Gary had broken up with me at the party. My mind kept on replaying flashbacks of what he last said to me; “Look Kenny!! You better get yourself a girlfriend and get married before people at work figure out about you and me … they’re getting very suspicious that you are always with me where ever I go … I’m sorry, Kenny … I found this girl … I married her … so goodbye, my love. I have to go…” I cried on that last thought. But, suddenly, I hit hard on the brakes and swerved the car to avoid hitting something that I saw at the last second. I screamed “What the f*ck??!!!” I got out of the car and rushed to what had fallen onto the road from the truck stop. It was a little boy. He was unconscious.

It was very late that night; I was distraught, tired and panicking. I followed my instincts as a skilled EMS nurse to check the boy for anything broken or damaged. I couldn’t find anything wrong. So, I deem the boy is ready for transport. I scooped up the boy and put him into the backseat. I covered him with my jacket to keep him warm. I drove home and put him in Gary bed. I went off to sleep in my own bed to crash for the rest of the night.

At 3am, the boy screamed. It was really scary; like someone was killing the poor child. I fell out of my bed trying to get out of the room in a hurry. I rushed into Gary bedroom to find the child screaming “Where am I???” He was crying aguishly and couldn’t cope with something deep in his thoughts.

I instinctively picked him up and hugged the poor kid but the boy screamed even longer and louder than ever. I got so upset at shock at hearing his shrilling cries. I remembered back when I was a boy my brother would sing a nursery song to me whenever I was sad. So I sang that song to him and rocked him to sleep; he hugged me back. I said to him “You’re ok. You’re ok. You just had a bad dream. Shhh … There now … Please go to sleep and rest, Baby” and I continued the rest of the lullaby song and rub his back.

It worked; the boy quieted down and went back to sleep. I was still tired from my long work day and long night partying. I decided to sleep with the boy in Gary bed in case he screams for someone. I thought, at least I won’t be very far from him if I fall out of bed again. I quickly fell back to sleep; my weariness had overtaken me. The boy cuddled in front of me where he felt safe, warm, and peaceful. He smiled.
