This is a short story in two or three parts. Basil is an artist. A hermit. He's been hurt far too many times to count. Until he meets THE SWIMMER. An enigma that challenges his sanity.

This is the first part. I have deliberately used unconventional writing methods . You will find missing commas. sometimes missing periods and sentence run ons. This has been done in order to expound on Basil's mental state. I repeat, this is deliberate.  I really do know where the commas should be.  But apart from this, footprints is a story of wanting, of loss, and of hope.
The story is experimental and is written in second person present tense.  This is also deliberate as I want you, the reader, to experience it as though you are the main character.

I wonder, must Basil paint, or does he fill his time painting mainly to avoid trying other things that might again hurt him? He may never paint again, but he has Will. You mentioned Will's upcoming reaction to seeing his portrait. After all that's transpired, I cannot image what that portrait could do now, but I don't think Will's seen it yet.
Will is a temperamental guy at heart. He loves the beauty in life and what happened in the sea that day, was the ugliest moment of his life. Save this little insight for the next chapter and be prepared to be wowed.
