Toward a boring critism of Dom's work

Ok, I'm not trying to be rude, but I think that the topic Magical moments in Dom's Stories...toward a serious critism of Dom's Work is easily the most boring topic I've ever seen on the Domoholic's forum. Maybe I'm not refined enough to be interested, but I have to say that I've never actually started to get drowsy while reading something on this forum.......until I read that topic......ok, sorry. I just had to say something.

I think it's a mistake to try to over analyze Dom's work that way. He works hard on his stories and he does a really good job of putting things together, and somehow, I have a hard time believing that he sit's and wonders about the elements of the Buddah Perspective or the Kentian sublime (whatever that is) when he's working on his stories. I would be suprised if he thinks that happy endings are a way to suspend time as he's writing his last chapters.

Now, of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Dom actually does think about things like that as he contemplates how he plans to get grandma Alice and Luke to shack up in the last chapter. Perhap's he does want to suspend time with a happy ending. Maybe I'm just a shallow dummy with no ability to look at the bigger picture. Either way, I still say that without a doubt, that is the most boring topic I've read in the whole history of the United States of America :king: :king: :king:

Changing the subject, I'd like to thank everyone for their support with the death of my Big Papu(great grandfather). The replies I've recieved have been awesome, and reading them reminds me once again that I'm not just part of a forum here, but a part of something bigger. This is a wonderful forum and I'm proud to be a member and an author here. Speaking of that......

I would like to that my editor, Talonrider, for doing such an awesome job on my story. He's made some big improvements and he's helped me with my writing style not just in my story, but in school too. My creative learning teacher says she can see an improvement in everything I'm turning in, and that's because I'm picking stuff up from Jan(Talonrider). So anyway, we're almost through with the editing, then I'm going to start posting chapters again. I hope everyone who's reading the story understands the delay :)

Well, I better get in the shower. I know it's early, but I need to have some extra time this morning to get ready because I have about 6 new outfits and I'm not sure which on I'm gonna wear today

Kisses

Nick

I have to admit, that particular topic's not the most gripping, but I wouldn't call it the most boring I've ever read. If you want truly boring topics I know a couple of other forums that would have you comatose before you've even opened the first post. :P

Dom's work flows well and seems to be carefully planned, but I have to agree with you - I don't think he contemplates religious or philosophical ideologies when writing them. If he did I doubt they would work as well as they do. I'm sure it's interesting to see what other people think of his work, but most writers just allow their stories to flow out of them.

I can still remember going to see a play at the local theatre when I was at school and afterwards we got an opportunity to talk to the guy who wrote it. One of my classmates asked a question about the suicide of one of the characters - a villain in the story - and before he could answer my English teacher started spouting off about the influence of Karma and how the author was trying to show that seeking wealth without regard to the people you tread on to get it only leaves you miserable and alone. She went on for five minutes before the author himself cut her off, telling her "Actually, I killed him off because he bored the shit out of me."

As I say, it's interesting to hear how people interpret an author's motivations, but it's rare for them to ever get close to the truth. The best writers just write stories to interest them and the twists and turns are there to keep them entertained as much as the reader.

I'm afraid I didn't spot the thread about the death of your great grandfather until today - I'm really sorry mate and I hope you're ok. He did have a long life and from what you said most likely a good one, but that doesn't make it any easier for you or your family.

I've just started reading your story, but what I've read so far seems great - just don't post the next chapters too quickly or I'll never catch up. :P

Hey Nick! Don't be afraid to tell us how you really feel about that thread :lol::lol: .

I stop reading once I hit three words I don't know the definition of and have to hit the dictionary :read: .

It's the beauty of this forum. If you don't like a thread or where it's going, you don't have to read it. Some people don't like our predictions and our banter about who Rory will end up with (I can't believe it myself, but some people haven't even declared whether they're LRITE, SR**E, or LG***E :blink: ). Now that's rude :P .

Take Care®,

Heh. Sounds like a scene from Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School" (Hey, I was working in a theater, so sue me). I'll admit, I couldn't take literary criticism too seriously after that, at least not the bits where we're supposed to delve into what The Author Thought.

Speaking as an author, what we're often thinking is "Are there any donuts left?" :P

Well Nick, I hadn't read that thread until you mentioned it, and now that I have I'm less than impressed. Sometimes people just over-analyze things. I can't decide whether they do it, in this case, from a true dedication and fixation with Dom's work or whether they're doing it to try to sound intelligent. I'd tend to think it's the former of the two.

Hey Nick! :)

Well speaking as someone who actually posted on that thread, I'd have to say I did enjoy it. I can definitely see how it could be construed as boring though, but it's just the sort of thing I like doing. I tend to be very (over) analytical. But the truth is you've definitely got a point, some of the best and simplest pleasures in life are ruined by people over-analyzing them. I've often found myself missing the bigger picture or the simple enjoyment in something as I've picked apart the details.

I also agree with you; it's unlikely Dom was thinking any of that. It's unlikely most authors are thinking what people project onto them. The first time I took a course about reviewing/analyzing literature my instructor made a point of telling us that in most cases the author would be a fool to definitively confirm or reject people's interpretations. This is because the truly great thing about good writing is that it's very subjective and open to interpretation. People can always find deeper, hidden meanings if they look for them, even if the author didn't intend to put them in. But as somone else (can't remember who) stated, once a writer shares his work it ceases to be completely his. And in some regards you own individual interpertation of something is really the only one that matters.

I'm definitely looking forward to your story starting up again! :D But of course I understand and appreciate the time off you took for editing.

I was very sorry to hear about your big papu :( . I remember him from the earlier chapters of your story. I know it must be very difficult, but you seem to be doing an excellent job of seeing the good times and keeping a positive perspective. Warm wishes and prayers to you and the family.

Awesome about having 6 new outfits! That's definitely not a problem I mind having either ;) . In fact a few months ago I came to the conclusion that I was happiest if there was at least a few things in my closet that I've never worn. Even though I tend to stick with my favourites anyway, it's just fun to one day wake up and say "well I'm going to wear something I've never worn before!" Goodness I already was in the mood for shopping, this line of thinking definitely isn't helping :P

I just realized this reply has gone on quite long.....I hope this isn't the most boring reply you've ever read :P:boy:

Anyway have an awesome day and take care! :D
