Writing Prompts #674 & #675

Hope everyone has had a great week so far. It's time for this weeks writing prompts. If you're stuck, or you're considering writing for the first time, these might be perfect for you. Don't forget that stories under 1,000 words must be posted as part of a collection.

Prompt 674 – Creative

Tag – First Line

“What do you mean, I’m the father?”

Prompt 675 – Creative

Tag – First Date

You set up a romantic first date, but your date recently was in an accident and their leg is still in a cast. What is the date like?

Don't forget to share your prompt responses from last week!

I'm fired. I completely spaced posting the responses to "Renee's Writing Challenge" on the 1st. It looks like the only one to take up the challenge, was Puppilull.

Thanks for taking the challenge, @Puppilull. What was your experience like when writing the two short stories? Was it easier than you thought? More difficult?

Both were good!  @Puppilull did a great job.  Her stories raised lots of questions and well, sifting through the evidence to find the answer was fun.

It's a shame there weren't more.  I think it was the timing ... maybe you could run this challenge again?  It's an interesting one.

I had an instant idea (slightly borrowed from the movie Sliding doors ;) ), so getting them together wasn't very difficult. I did notice, however, that I was having trouble keeping the stories aligned. While I was writing the second one, the characters morfed and I suddenly realized I had to tweak the first one in certain ways. So the characters continued to evolve, even in such short chapters. I wasn't expecting that to happen even if I do have a tendency to change names and such while writing...

It would be fun if the challenge came back again, since I think too many other challenges happened at the same time. A repeat this fall perhaps?

I would have liked to participate in the challenge, but the timing didn't work out for me.  A repeat in the fall sounds like a great idea.  :)

It wasn't specific to this prompt, but my story My Son, is all about this question.

But did you use the first line?

But did you use the first line?

No. My story was both started and completed before that line was published. I thought the coincidence of the line, and my story was just too funny.

“What do you mean, I’m the father?”

Tom poured two drinks and slid one across the bar.

"Let's see. It was your idea Dan."

"But... but... It was so obvious. Others were suggesting it too."

Tom sipped the whiskey and said, " No one with your stature and reputation. Oh sure, lot's of people have been thinking about it but you are the one that got behind and pushed."

Dan shook his head, "Well, yeah. I suppose when you run your mouth, you've got to put up or shut up."

"Whoa there Dan. You did a LOT more than put up. Putting your patents and royalties in one of the largest trusts in history to fund what will be a multi-generational effort counts as putting up."

"Even while the war was still going on people were complaining about the stand down on surveys and colonization. A lot of people were thinking about restarting the Alliance Survey Service."

Tom laughed and said, "Well at least now it won't have the acronym A.S.S." He raised his glass and said, "To the Pathfinders. This is going to be a lot of fun."
