Tech Tuesday - Story Archive Next Version

So I shared a sneak peek of this post in our Writer's Circle.  I encourage authors to join the club if you haven't yet because there are a ton of great posts in there, and sometimes early information about upcoming features for authors.

So, we've got the new Stories user interface worked out, and we're fixing the bugs.  Here's a sneak peek at it: image.png

The quick Title search will now be on every page.  The previously empty search field now has "Search stories..." to give a clear indication of what it is.  The filter bar replaces the advanced search functions... and it is a live filter.  This means if you select "Follow" and then select Stories I Follow, you get this:

The search is applied instantly, and you can see it dropped from 883 pages of results to 2.

Or how about Complete Fantasy Stories sorted by word count:

We've updated the Authors' pages as well:

We are hoping to be able to upgrade this week.  There will be some bugs to work out, but we need to test on the live server with more people to finally squash them all. When we upgrade, there will be a topic posted for with more information and for bugs like we've done before with directions of what to do if you encounter one and what information you need to share.

The changes to the story archive look good. I think they will be useful going forward. If I could, I'd like to suggest a couple of additions that, at least for me, might be useful:  first, I'd love to see an "obvious" option to unfollow a story. Sometimes I find that an author takes a story in a direction that quickly makes me lose interest. Secondly, I'd really love to see an option to exclude certain categories, i.e. poetry, anything involving aliens, wizards or weirwolves, etc. Personally, I'd also welcome the ability to hide all content from certain authors. I'm a retired newspaper editor and while I can read past an occasional error in grammar, spelling or sentence structure, there are some authors that don't have a clue. In a couple cases, I've even offered to help them and was told to go take a flying leap off the nearest tall building. I know nothing about what goes on under the hood to make this site operate so maybe my ideas are not possible. I just wanted to throw them out there for consideration. Thanks.

I've found there are two ways one follows stories:

1. On the Main Story Page, if you had clicked the White Follow Button, it would turn blue as a Followed Button. If you click that, there is an option to Unfollow the story.

2. On the Main Story Page, if you had given a "reaction" like a Blue Thumb's Up, or a Heart, or something else. Removing that will unfollow the story for you too.

I hope that helps.

EDIT: Of course, if had done both, you need to remove both.

Thanks. I think I've tried your first suggestion before but it didn't seem to work, might have been a glitch on my end. I'll go back and try that again. ☺️

There is also the Manage followed section under account. Content Stories section.

Another thing to be aware of is that if you Follow the Author on the author page or Follow their profile, you'll still get notifications.

We are working on finally correcting the Notification issue as we think we've managed to identify the cause.  It's not nearly as clear cut as you'd think it would be.

That was just released per this blog post...

Set category to fiction.

This eliminates Poetry.

Then set your Genres to not include Science Fiction and Fantasy

That should get most of that stuff.  However, this system is about finding things, not blocking them.  And no, we're not going to block authors either.

Selecting genres seemed to work,  however nothing I clicked under categories seemed to work. Nothing got highlighted nor did a check mark appear beside it as shown in your example. Oh well, I can't win them all.

Other than the fact that the link I included in my post, gave you the Fiction category already selected make sure the "All" is not checked.

see how the selected categories are grayed out?  Unchecking "All" makes them selectable.  I showed this for another filter box in the video linked on every page.

When I click the categories button everything under that is greyed out including the select option and all of the options under it.

What browser are you using?  It works fine in Chrome and Firefox.  I can see a partial issue in Edge.  It doesn't work in Internet Explorer at all (And IE shouldn't be in use at this point)

I am using the latest version of Chrome. I've also done some more checking. I had thought maybe the problem was that I was trying to set things up on my Android tablet so I switched to my desktop. When I signed into my account, and went to the stories tab, the only button selected (highlighted) was the sorting button. None of my previously selected choices under genre were selected and while I could select them again, when I clicked on category, again everything is greyed out. I also found that when I signed out and then back in, again nothing was saved. I went back to the tablet and had the same result, nothing saved. Also as an FYI, I have made sure I did NOT click on the reset button (the minus sign.)
