Cake Day

Cake Day is on November 26. Have your cake and eat it too on one of the greatest holidays ever invented.

Also known as National Cake Day in the United States, this unofficial holiday whose origins are unknown, celebrates and honors cake, the food of champions.

Used for Religious Ceremonies

Cake has been everyone's favorite dessert since ancient times, though the earliest cakes were more like bread and were usually sweetened with honey. These cakes were mostly used for religious purposes and in religious and cultural ceremonies and were usually round in shape since they were made and molded by hands.

These days, advances in baking technology have made cake baking and decorating a specialized culinary field with bakers and decorators constantly trying to create elaborate, gravity defying cakes.

Symbol of Celebration

In modern times, cake is seen as a symbol of celebration. Most special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and weddings prominently feature cakes.

In popular culture, the term cake day is also sometimes used to refer to one's birthday. On the popular social media website Reddit, the term is used when marking the anniversary of the day a member's username was born. Users usually add an icon of a cake next to their names on that day.

How to Celebrate?

  • Eat cake! For breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Make your favorite cake and don't forget to share it with friends and family.
  • Have a cake baking contest at work. Whoever wins for the best cake gets to take the leftovers (if any) home.
  • If the day coincides with Thanksgiving in the United States, replace the pie at your thanksgiving table with cake. Or even better just add cake to the array of desserts.

Did You Know…

…that the term cake comes from the Old Norse word kaka?

Buy Nothing Day

The Friday after Thanksgiving day in the United States is Buy Nothing Day.

The unofficial holiday makes a statement against the consumerism that takes over the country on Black Friday. In the rest of the world, the holiday is observed on the last Saturday of November.

Created by Adbusters

Buy Nothing Day began in Canada in 1992 by Adbusters, a "global network of artists, activists, educators, students and entrepreneurs". The day was created in order to raise awareness about the effects of consumerism on society, the economy and the environment. It was first observed in September, but was then subsequently moved to November.

How to Celebrate?

  • Abstain from making any purchases on this day. Avoid going to the stores - brick and mortar or online.
  • The creators of this holiday, Adbusters, recommend that people cut up their credit cards, walk around stores without buying anything and do the whirl-mart. Whirl-mart is the act of walking around a store with a cart without buying anything.

Did You Know…

…that contrary to popular belief Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day in the U.S.? That distinction goes to the Saturday before Christmas.

A little girl is serving her father tea while her mother is out shopping. The mother comes home and the father says, "Watch this!"

The little girl goes and serves the mother tea.

The mother responds, "Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?"

It’s a sunny morning in the Big Forest and the Bear family is just waking up. Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he squeaks.

Father Bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl. It is also empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he roars.

Mother Bear sticks her head out the kitchen door and yells, "For Pete's sake, how many times do we have to go through this?

It was Mother Bear who go up first. It was Mother Bear who woke everybody else in the house up. It was Mother Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last night and put everything away. It was Mother Bear who went out into the cold early morning air to fetch the newspaper. It was Mother Bear who set the table. It was Mother Bear who put the cat out, cleaned the litter box and filled the cat's water and food dish.

And now that you've decided to come down stairs and grace me with your presence, listen good because I'm only going to say this one more time: I haven't made the f*cking porridge yet!"

A boy was going through his grandmother's wallet one night and found her ID card. "Grandma?" he asked,"How much do you weigh?"

His grandmother replied, "That's not an appropriate question, Jimmy"

He then asked, "How old are you?"

She again replied, "That's not appropriate, Jimmy."

Finally he asked, "Grandma, why did grandpa leave you?" Before she had time to answer, Jimmy looked at the card and said, "Oh I see, it's because you got an 'F' in sex."
