Study: Sexual Desire is in Your Genes

I take a look at a number of scientific jounals every month to see what is new. I thought I might share this as it might be of interest. The material is OK as I have cited it and created links to its source.

Your thoughts and impressions are welcome of course.

Study: Sexual Desire is in Your Genes

Your sexual desire or lack thereof could be in your genes, scientists announced today. The discovery might change how psychologists view sexuality.

The researchers found that individual differences in human sexual desire can be attributed to genetic variations. The study is the first to provide data to show that common variations in the sequence of DNA impact on sexual desire, arousal and function, the researchers said.

The scientists, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, examined the DNA of 148 healthy male and female university students and compared the results with questionnaires asking for the students' self-descriptions of their sexual desire, arousal and sexual function. They found a correlation between variants in a gene called the D4 receptor and the students' self-reports on sexuality.

The results suggest that low sexual desire might be a normal biological condition rather than a psychological problem, the researchers say. Further, it might be possible to develop drugs to alter sexual desire based on the new findings.

The research was led by Richard Ebstein and was published in the online version of the journal Molecular Psychiatry. [see abstract below]

Generally, I'm in favor of discarding the clothing, but to each their own...

LOL You guys! :boy:

Personally as far as the whole "Nature vs. Nurture" debate goes I've always favoured "Nurture". I like to think that I am responsible for the way I am (or at least my experiences and reactions are). Of course in all fairness I concede that it's more likely a 50-50 scenario, but I tend to prefer things that highlight the importance of experience and personal choice. I realize this isn't an especially popular position to take in the gay community, but personally I never thought it particularly mattered "why" in the first place, and I think I would have chosen to be gay given the choice. I know I'd chose to remain so given the option.

Anyway it's a very interesting article, and even if it doesn't fall in line with what I like to think, I do "believe" it.

Thanks for sharing it with us, James. Have an awesome day and take care!

There may be some confusion over the thesis of this article. By sexual desire, the authors refer to libido- not orientation.

In the debate between nature and nurture on the origin of homosexuality, I base my argument on experience rather than experiment. If it couldn't be beaten out of me, it had to be nature.

I would have no sooner chosen to be gay than to grab a red-hot pot on a stove. The pain involved would have been quite enough incentive to make a different "choice".

Oh I know, I just drifted from the point a bit.

well it could be that after whatever unique environmental factors go into it there's no going back.

Hi James

Interesting study. I also agree with your post. For me there was never any other path to take nor do I think I would want one.

BTW it's raining again! ugh! I 'm inflating the rubber boat as I type this. Hahahaha
