Grammarly is a 100% web based solution for grammar checking.

 

It is a pay service which allows you to dump text into the web interface and set the options for the types of checks that you require.

 

Grammarly checks for plagiarism- which is probably useful for teachers but annoying for other types of users. In my test case, I was flagged for several erroneous small blocks of text. The snippets of text were so generic they could have fit anywhere. I turned off the feature.

 

Grammarly checks for general, creative, business, academic, technical and casual types of writing. In addition to grammar, punctuation, tense and type usage, the program also checks for spelling, synonyms, homonyms and proper usage.

 

It works by dropping text directly into the web interface. The program then scans it and creates an exception report sorted by types of errors. You can then make manual corrections.

 

The problem that I had with the program is that it only accepts text. Once it is returned to the word processor, all formatting has to be re-entered.

 

I was pleased with the results. Difficult types of errors to detect are flagged and marked. Spelling is checked but so is usage. Many times a word is spelled correctly but misused in context.

 

I have learned quite a lot about punctuation from Grammerly. I have found that I am much too stingy with commas. I use semi-colons without fear. Grammarly makes me the Capitan of my own text.

 

Large blocks of text are difficult to deal with. I suggest cutting it into one page segments. They are much less cumbersome and easier to work with.

 

I would like to see this program modified or upgraded to interface directly with a word processors (like MS Word or OpenOffice) so that edits can be made directly in the document.
