Writer's Block

Hi ^^ I have this habit of writing a story, getting to about a thousand to two thousand words and then getting stuck. I have a ton of ideas but I can't ever really keep with one specific one, I've just put them off and write about other ideas in my head. I was wondering do you think I should just stick with one story and wait till something comes or keep with what I have been doing. Or maybe something entirely different? Do any of you have some insight? Thanks.

1-2 thousand words isn't very far in a story to be getting stuck. Are you trying to write a long story or a short story? Just wondering what your goal length is to see how far you are getting. You could always try to weekly prompts for a short shake-up to your block. If you are writing a short story, how are you planning out your story line? have you thought through the plot or where you winging it and get stuck because you're not sure what you have in mind for next?

Sorry that I have more questions than answers...but still, i hope it helps :)

This may or may not be what you're looking for, but one thing I do is make an outline before I start writing. I write down how I want the story to begin and then I write down how I expect it to end. Then I try to fill in the area in between by listing all of the ideas I have about what I want to happen in the story. I often make additions to this outline as I write and other ideas come to me, and sometimes I change the ending I originally forewsaw, but it usually helps me get from point A (the beginning) to point B (the end).

I hope that helps.

Often times lack of direction in what you are writing can create that type of a problem, I've had that happen. For me, it is usually when I approach the end of a story and begin trying to tie up every darn detail that I get a tad tripped up. Creating a plan can really work to prevent those issues. If that's not it, GA's 'sister' site FSO has a blog I wrote up last week that gives some tips to get you writing if you find yourself blocked for one reason or another. You can read it here.

Thank you for your help. I'm pretty sure my problem is I never really think up a story but a summary. From that summary I'll write whatever comes to mind and then get stuck. Sometimes if I really like the idea I'll come up with an outline but then I get stuck with the outline... it's a tiresome process. I'll try to work harder with the outlines hopefully It'll work out. Thank you again.
