Never met Cleve, but have read some about him, and heard plenty of stories from people associated with the Names Project when I worked on a few Quilt displays in South Florida. I honored his legacy by having the main character of my series arrange for a few panels to be displayed at his school. A little history for the youngsters who didn't live through the holocaust.

Cleve was one of the four who inspired the major characters in the miniseries, When We Rise. This series was intended to provide a brief overview of LGBTQ history for heterosexuals and young LGBTQ kids who wouldn’t have learned it in school. For those of us who lived through at least parts of the period, it wasn’t either complete or detailed enough, but we weren’t the intended primary audience. As the responses to this topic suggest, we have a vast and varied history to explore!  ;–)

A young Cleve was also portrayed in Milk.  ;–)

I'm not sure if this counts because he is fictional, but the character of Malone from Andrew Holleran's Dancer From The Dance. His struggle and wanderings through life searching for something he (un)consciously denied himself was a breathtaking story, and one I can very personally relate to.

If we are talking real life, then Lady Gaga. When her song Born This Way came out in 2011, I was a 19 year old, mostly closeted college freshman. That song was one of my inspirations for beginning to come out.

That sounds like two other topics to discuss: fictional characters and songs!  ;–)
