Yaoi, anyone?

Recommended Posts

So some of us love the stereotypical semes and ukes, and the fact that there are only two types of semes and one type of uke. Some of us hate it.

Some of us love the glowing cones of light. Only some.

Some of us think yaoi is horribly unrealistic. (Probably right).

Some of us just don't care about Japan.

Some are terrified of yaoi fangirls. Or maybe it's the by women-for women thing?

So yeah. Yaoi. What do you guys think about it?

Lol. I like Yaoi stories, my cuz gave me some Magna of her. I've read some that are realistic. I enjoy the ones that aren't so stero typical.

Btw for people who don't know what Uke, Seme mean,

Uke is a Bottom/Submissive

Seme = Top

Ya, Ive been known to frequant a few Yaoi boards.

Not a huge fan, but its fun to look at occasionally.

And CJ it only takes a quick search to find out, but Yaoi is male/male jap inspired anime. Just as Yuri is female/female, and Shota is man/boy or boy/boy.

There are some really good ones. Some are just pornographic and nothing more. I al so think that Yaoi fangirls are nothing different from fangirls of say... boybands. I like yaoi fangirls cause they're honest. I love anime in general anyway, why not try an anime that has gay content in it? And not all Yaoi is pornographic. And also, theres Shounen-Ai which implies it which is funny as hell. The best one, though quite disturbing at times, is Ouran Highschool Host Club. Everyone should check it out. It's funny as hell. and oh:

Yaoi and Shounen-Ai:

Yaoi is a term of Japanese origin used to refer to manga, anime, or fan art that focuses on homosexual relationships between male characters. It can be compared with shōnen-ai. which focuses on the same topic, but is (typically) not as graphic in its portrayal of homosexuality. Both categories are now commonly referred to as Boys' Love in Japan.

I was thinking of starting a topic about this myself, when I saw someone already had. :D

I've long been interested, but only just recently was motivated enough to buy something. I was browsing at the bookstore, and Love Mode caught my eye. I ended up not buying that, but Gorgeous Carat instead, because I liked the artwork and the setting better. I'm enjoying it a lot so far, although I'm a little disappointed it isn't more explicit. I'm looking for something with a good balance of plot and, er, 'action'.

I don't think yaoi is meant to be realistic, so I don't expect it. I like it for what it is, and when I want realism, I'll read something like Holleran's The Beauty of Men or watch Brokeback Mountain. To me, yaoi is escapism/fantasy, and relaxing 'mind candy' to read at the end of a stressful day.

I'm glad that yaoi is getting popular in the west, because it's making people realize that it's not uncommon for women to enjoy reading or writing about m/m relationships, and that makes me feel like less of a freak. ^_^

I heard ya there.

Heh, yaoi can be strange, and you have to be at a certain mind set to read it. Otherwise, it just makes you think that the person that made it is emotionally held back (or maybe Japanese?). i

Hmm, some of my recs for those with less knowledge of yaoi/shounen-ai:

FAKE: Sort of like a gay Starski and Hutch. Set in New York, the two main characters are the responsible half-Japanese Ryo and the somewhat perverted, lazy, loose-fisted Dee. Secondary characters are Ryo's sort of adopted son Bicky and Bicky's friend/girlfriend Carol. Funny and cute, it's not very satisfying for those looking for ...uhhmm...action that doesn't include rifles (or it least not the type that helps fight crime). Well, there is enough to grant the last book in the series an R rating. (A picture of the first manga has already been posted on the forum).

Yatteranneeze!: Highschool romance + punk makeovers + gay issues (you know, AIDS and discrimination and such) + some large necks. There's great plot with a satisfying amount of scenes you wouldn't like your grandmother to see. This is the epitome of what yaoi is, so be prepared for some culture shocks if you're new to the manga/yaoi world. I don't think this has been published in English yet, but it can be found online.

Wow, I found this thread with a google search. :D Anyway, I have always been obsessed with Japanese culture. Recently, I have been watching a tv series from Japan. Interestingly enough, it had a lot of lesbianeroticism (excuse the made up word, because I do not know if there is a better word). Then someone started telling me about yaoi, so I started wondering about it. I've done a little bit of research, but I still have a lot more work to do. In the future, you might see someone tackle a modified version of it... It will be so much fun! :2thumbs:

I can literally say that I'd never even heard of it before your post. I still have no idea what it is.

Um... what is a Yaoi?

Yaoi and Shounen-Ai:

Yaoi is a term of Japanese origin used to refer to manga, anime, or fan art that focuses on homosexual relationships between male characters. Oh gods! So close, so, so close. You are right, it can be compared to shonen-ai, but that's because, yaoi is the american term for it.

Wikipedia has the information you would need about yaoi and the way it came to be. But in short, it says:

Yaoi is a publishing genre which focuses on male/male relationships and is marketed at females. The genre originated in Japan and encompasses, manga, anime, novels and dojinshi. In Japan, this genre is called "Boy's Love" or simply "BL" and "yaoi" as a genre name is mostly used by western fans.

Shock and awe: yaoi is BL! Yes, Boy's love and yaoi is one in the same.

Alright, one more quote:

Yaoi, outside of Japan, is an umbrella term for all male/male comics made for women in Japan; as well as male/male comics made in the west. The actual name of the genre in Japan is called 'BL' or 'Boy's Love'. BL is an extension of shoujo and josei categories[citation needed], but is considered a separate category. Like 'Yaoi' is used in the United States, 'BL' is used in Japan to include: commercial and amateur works, works with no sex, works with sex, doujinshi about adolescents with little or no sex, works in all types of media - manga, anime, novels, games, and drama CDs with male/male content, and characters of all ages in male/male content. Terms such as yaoi, shounen-ai, tanbi, June, and original June, are all referred to in Japan, as 'BL'. However, it does not include gay publications

See, yaoi is just BL under a different name.

Now that is cleared up, I enjoy yaoi. I prefer the movies such as Level C and Legend of the Blue Wolves (has rape and sex in it). I also enjoy the cutsie anime Gravitation. I like yaoi, though not the terms. I do use them, but that's only because of the fact that I also write Fanfiction since it's such a great way to practice my writing without worrying about characters and what not.

If you take a bit of time and look for the right stuff, it can be enjoyable and a very wonderful watch, read or listen (depending on what you're doing.)

You should add it to the list!

I've never really followed this stuff very much. I watched some sort of interesting gay and lesbian anime (so perhaps that would count?) a while back with some friends. It was cute and I didn't mind watching it, but I don't think I'm going to get into it.

Yeah, that counts. And not a lot of people follow it, but still find it interesting, you're not alone.

I don't like Yaoi because of all of the graphic sex and the often very crappy stories. I love Shounen-ai, though.

Yaoi: Western term for shoenen-ai/Boys Love. Please refer to above post. Thank you.

I added it to the list. :D I knew there was a list like that around her somewhere. Now I actually have a question for the experts. Does yaoi ever include tenticles?

It can. Depends on what you are reading/watching and how twisted it is. I've seen anime that has straight sex, where the woman turned out to be an it. But that's more of the twisted stuff.

Now that is done, I'm off to bed. Night tiger.
