  1. There is a much older movie titled She from 1965. It sucked, too.
  2. Grizzly Man The story of a film documentarian who lived among them and took the apparent placidity of grizzly bears so much for granted, he and his girlfriend were ultimately eaten by one. It was off-camera, but you still got the actual final screams. His whiny, simpering voice and propensity for naming the wild bears as if they were stuffed children's toys (he called one Mr. Chocolate) had me on my feet, cheering for the bear at the top of my lungs, when they started screaming.
  3. Happy Birthday!

    Art?

But if the thought changes the way one lives, it is expressed. Can't the way one lives life be an art form? Once the end result is called art, should we call the entire creative process art, or draw a line and say, "All before this is not art. All from this point forward is art."? Whatever definition is advanced, most of us are always going to make our own decisions as to what is an art form, and whether or not it's any good.

    Art?

Sufficient is not always complete, nor does it necessarily convey absolute denotation or connotation. From Merriam-Webster online: [3 : an occupation requiring knowledge or skill <the art of organ building>] From the Online Etymology Dictionary: [art (n.) 13c., "skill as a result of learning or practice," from Old French art (10c.), from Latin artem (nominative ars) "work of art; practical skill; a business, craft," from PIE *ar-ti- (cognates: Sanskrit rtih "manner, mode;" Greek arti "just," artios "complete, suitable," artizein "to prepare;" Latin artus "joint;" Armenian arnam "make;" German art "manner, mode"), from root *ar- "fit together, join" (see arm (n.1)). In Middle English usually with a sense of "skill in scholarship and learning" (c.1300), especially in the seven sciences, or liberal arts.] Language is imprecise, derivative, and changeful. This is one reason why these discussions have merit.

    Art?

Is art the concept or its communication? I can conceive of many things I can never express, but I'd never consider those thoughts art. Jokingly, I ask, But isn't that the essence of abstract art - that which transcends expression? And I reply, masturbation is sex.
  8. Depends. James, what's the scale on that map?
  9. And many more, Allen. I hope it's been a great one.
  10. I know a lot of folks who moved there.

    Adulthood

We does the best we can with what we gots. Just take care of yourself, be good to yourself and others, and build your life, stick by stone. You'll do fine.
  12. Austin, TX - a liberal college town in the middle of the buckle of the Bible Belt. There are persistent rumors of Gov. Rick Perry getting drunken blow jobs from rent boys, and numerous state legislators have been spotted at this or that gay bar. There are a few bars here, I guess, although mostly, gay clientele is being absorbed into the mainstream. The adult novelty shops usually have a gay section for the vids, but the other stuff is divided up according to the plumbing of the intended users. I'm not aware of any gay bookstores, but many independent stores have a gay interest section. A lesbian couple lived 3 doors down, but they split the sheets. People on our block wave, smile, and talk to us whenever we're out. They love our dogs, and they're envious of our new garage door. Most gay clubs and bars I've been in have been kinda skanky. That's a big reason I haven't been to one in years. If I wanna get dirty, I'll go camping or paddling. Never had any interest in a bath house. Don't know, don't care. We went to a full moon howl at Barton Springs Pool with some straight friends several months ago. There was a group of rowdy gay boys having a good time on the other side, and John said, "Maybe we ought to go sit in the gay section." Dave replied, "You ARE in the gay section." (Even though John is happily married, we always tease him about being just a little TOO curious.)

    Art?

The origin of the word art is interesting. It derives from artifice, which speaks to virtuosity of execution. Looking at the landscape Matt posted, I admire the realism and depth, and the quality of the technique. Talking about 2 dimensional art, I've come to believe virtuosity isn't just about the accuracy of an image, the realism of the portrayal. If an abstract painting or a badly taken photo can move me to tears (and some have), to my mind, it's art. The artist will have conveyed his message.
  14. Welcome to the landed gentry! I believe you'll find your outlook has changed in a short time. Once the carpal tunnel syndrome subsides, invite some folks over to celebrate. Once laughter gets into the walls, life won't be the same. That's the best present you could've given yourself. Congratulations!

    Facing Facts

Farewells are a sad part of life, but you can always take something away from them. I try to remember a Dr. Seuss quote a young man known as Roan had on his profile here: "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened."
  17. I resemble that.
  18. Congratulations. It feels good to take the reins, doesn't it?
  19. Am I too late for cake? Crap! O well. Dennis, Happy Birthday. I hope it was a great one, and the beginning of a great new chapter in your life. Queerling no more, but still every bit as special.
  20. It sounds like things are coming together for you both, and I'm glad. Don't let your boy put off school too long, though. There's no doubt you'll find your way. It just takes some folks a while longer to find the path. Best of luck, and regards to C.

  23. Hi. If you have any questions, just ask. Someone once described this site as frighteningly friendly. You'll get used to it quickly.
