  1. OMG!!!!! SOMEbody filled my inbox with raw chapters. Slave driver. lol
  2. FWIW, I followed the story on Nifty from the outset. It's the first editing I've taken on in a while, but this story deserves some love. I had no help to send, so I went, myself. I hope y'all (I'm from Texas. I can say that.) will give this story and author a read, and make him welcome.
  3. Thanks everybody. I really appreciate it.
  4. Do I get to ask, "Who's your daddy" first?
  5. I got home yesterday, and my neighbor had mowed my yard.
  6. You may find you have a rhythm, and a personal quota. Work with it, improve it, revel in it. There is no substitute for doing stuff. I would suggest one bit, though. Make a list of all you have to do, and each day, cross something off that list. You'll always be adding to that list, but if you always try to take something off, it evens out. If you're super-industrious, you may finish it all for a while. If that happens, turn up the tunes and dance around nekkid.
  7. Hola mijo. Beautiful to see you again.Sounds like you set some good priorities, and made some good tradeoffs.

    Now What?

Sorry, I didn't realize I had not responded. You're right - for better or worse, closure matters. Sometimes, the worse the situation, the more it matters. Blood relation doesn't always define family, and it seems Casey has one now, however tenuous or temporary. Thanks for commenting.

    Daylighting

Thanks for the comments. I think Casey already knows how Jim and Carol feel, but sometimes, we all need reassurances. I like Jessie a lot, too. It takes an "old soul" to raise a kid like James.

    Daylighting

Daylighting When Jim and Carol left the house, Carol already had a plan. Jim took his time driving, while Carol called ahead. “Hey John. Are you going to be home for the next hour?” … “Would you mind if Jim and I came by to talk about Casey?” … “No, it’s nothing any worse than what you already know. Maybe a little better, we don’t know.” … “OK, we can be there in fifteen minutes.” Carol hung up, and the two shared a smile. A few minutes later, they pulled into the social worker’s drivew
  15. My heart goes out to those in Ft. McMurray, because I've gone through the same thing. My house was one of 1,800 that were destroyed in 2011 in Bastrop, Texas. I'm reactivating my blog entries from that time, so that folks can understand what it's like from the inside. I'm also sending a donation to the Red Cross, and hope some of you will do the same.

    Now What?

I really appreciate your comments. Death takes a while to process, whatever the circumstances, but I couldn't picture Casey jumping for joy OR crying his eyes out. Guilt prevents the one, and anger prevents the other.

    Now What?

Now What? James didn’t know where to look, at first, glancing from Carol and Jim to the door Casey just walked through, but he quickly recovered and walked out after Casey, closing the door after him. Casey was sitting on the deck, his legs dangling off the edge, a couple of feet off the ground. He was leaning against a post, and made no move when the door opened and closed – just kept staring at a spot on the ground. James sat next to him and wrapped his arms around Casey, leaning his head aga
  18. Parents in the 50s said much the same. And the 70s, and the 80s. And the 90s. As for politics, a large percentage of Americans surveyed would not object to government by the military in some form or another. In a democratic republic, we have an uninformed electorate voting (those who bother) and basing their decisions on name recognition, so the reality tv star has the leg up on the zodiac killer.
  19. How peacocks shake their tail feathers The lead-in to the article states, Male peacocks fan their colourful rear feathers and shake them, but somehow keep their plumes' iridescent circles, or eyespots, nearly still, like a fixed stare. Since this is an author's website, I'll point out that writing "male peacock" is as redundant as writing "male cock" when referring to a rooster. The gender-neutral name for the species is peafowl.

    Morning Light

Sorry about the delay in posting this chapter, but I'm glad you enjoyed the re-read. As for luck, Casey's isn't all brown and smelly, as you see. Yep, he's still got blood relations. Casey's Not Done Yet.

Thanks for the comments. As I've told some young friends, you can't prevent bad stuff from happening, but the good things are what give you the strength to carry through. Let's hope Casey's got the credit in his account.

    Morning Light

Glad you liked it. One of the greatest joys "fun" parents have is making their kids blush. And photos like that often turn out to be the kids' most favorite. Mixed feelings indeed.

    Morning Light

Morning Light Casey woke to the sound of dishes clattering and soft voices downstairs. The smells of breakfast cooking reminded him of his first morning in this house, but this morning, he woke up to find James’ arms wrapped around him and their legs tangled together. He smiled, feeling James wedged into the cleft of his backside. He breathed a sigh and nestled in a little tighter. James must have felt him move, because he took a deep breath and squeezed Casey tight before nibbling his ear an
  24. Hey darlin'. Always good to hear from you, whatever the season or reason. They say that every artist must be a marketer, or hire one.
  25. Hey Drew! Happy Birthday, dude! I hope it was full of square pi's and inverse functions! Remember, the day doesn't end until midnight. If that's not long enough, remember, discounting daylight saving time, you've got 'til 1:00 a.m..
