  1. I start the day with 2 mugs of really good, really fresh, unadulterated coffee brewed to proper strength in a press pot. {really good = special blend of beans from Brazil, Ethiopia, Yemen & Indonesia} {really fresh = brewed just before pouring into the cup; beans ground after the water is in the kettle & heating; beans roasted no more than 14 days before grinding} {unadulterated = no sugar, cream, milk, artificial sweetener, flavoring syrup, spices, extracts, spirits, etc., just coffee beans and water} {proper strength = 1/3 cup beans to 16 oz. water}
  2. This is what seafood is supposed to look like: I was in college before I discovered that you didn't have to fry all fish and seafood (except maybe tuna).
  3. Current usage for the word "awesome" really annoys me. The Grand Canyon is awesome.... getting 7 Chicken McNuggets in your 6-piece order is not awesome. The mundane rarely inspires reverence, admiration or fear so isn't likely to ever be awesome.
  4. I don't think it's possible to waste Haagen Daz...unless you leave it in the freezer or on the counter too long
  5. It was 15 years ago, but by the end of The Blair Witch Project, the "film students" had annoyed me to the point that I was rooting for the witch.
  6. OK. I give.... What's a Turkish hammam????
  7. In public
  8. That was kind of scary. My main city is half way between the house I've lived in for the past 20 years and the house I'm getting ready to retire to.
  9. The Playing for Change Foundation has a couple of CDs and other merchandise for sale. Proceeds are used to fund music education, primarily in developing countries around the world. I bought their second CD a couple of years ago after I heard this tune on the radio:
  10. It's basically a scone.....usually plain, but sometimes made with cheese or something sweet. Equally at home with butter and jam as with sausage gravy. I imagine they'd be good with clotted cream as well, but that's very difficult to find in the states. "Sussed" is a Britishism that tends to amuse me along with "whilst", "I reckon" and a few other phrases that my UK co-workers use regularly that are perceived as archaic usage in the US. Use of the word "towel" in the context of feminine hygine products made it disturbingly clear to me that British and American are very different languages. (They're called "napkins" over here)
  11. ... or he'll end up on one of those "celebrities behaving badly" reality TV shows
  12. CORN BREAD 1 cup flour (self-rising) 1 cup corn meal (plain) 3 teaspoons baking soda 3 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup milk 1/3 cup butter; melted Mix together four, corn meal, baking soda, sugar and salt. Stir in remaining ingredients until just moistened. Pour in a greased 8x8 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Yield: 8 servings NOTES: If you don't have self-rising flour, use 1 cup all purpose flour and add 1/2 tsp salt and 1.5 tsp baking powder. Recipe works fine with powdered buttermilk...follow the instructions on the milk package for adding water & milk powder. Sugar is optional. Sharp cheese, sauteed chopped onions, salsa, bacon and / or pork cracklin's can be added for extra flavor.
  13. I wanna see the Duck Dynasty guys as contestants on RuPaul's Drag Race
  14. The Park Service euthanized the elk. They tried relocating him a couple of times, but he kept coming back and interacting too closely with park visitors. This interaction was the last straw.
  15. While the blog post was a little harsh, it's not exactly unique. There was a category on Jeopardy the other night called "WRITERS HATIN' ON WRITERS" that had similarly snarky remarks from the likes of Mark Twain about Jane Austin. I guess everybody's a critic
  16. You might change your minds about the beds if you ever have the chance to stay at a Sofitel, but then, you might have to cope with the facilities:
  17. I'm a little behind on my DVR viewing, so no Coven spoilers, please I got hooked from the promos...I figured with Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Jessica Lange, how can you go wrong? I enjoyed the series so much I went back to the first season on Netflix.... the Murder House story was just as good as Coven. Haven't made it past the first Asylum episode yet...it's getting off to a slow start. Not sure yet it's worth the time.

  20. I was gonna say that I recently found yogurt that expired in 2011, but then I remembered the two blocks of cheddar cheese that I bought in the UK sometime before the 2001 hoof & mouth outbreak. I kind of afraid to open it now, so it keeps getting pushed to the back of the fridge.
