  1. Netflix just rolled out the last 13 episodes of "Haven". I started watching on Friday night and finished this evening. It's based on a Stephen King novel and originally aired on the SyFy channel. I saw a few episodes when they were originally broadcast and decided to watch the entire series from start to finish when it landed on Netflix a year or so ago. They had 5 seasons with 13 episodes each. At the end of the 13 episodes of season 5 they stopped with a cliff-hanger. This release adds another 13 episodes to season 5 and completes the story. It took me two days to complete the 6 episodes of the new season of "Black Mirror". It's sort of like the Twilight Zone gets advanced tech. Each episode is a stand alone story and they're all kind of dark. I thought "Hated in the Nation" was the best story in this series. I would have binge watched West World, but HBO released it one episode per week, so that was on my schedule every Monday evening.
  2. Cheers, Robert. Laissez les bon temps roulez!
  3. RIP Leon...
  4. It's gotta be Frank Langella in the 1979 version of Dracula. Photos, clips & reviews at the link: http://www.goretro.com/2013/10/frank-langella-sexiest-dracula-ever.html
  5. If you don't turn on the porch light, you can keep it ALL for yourself -- at least, that's been my experience!
  6. Almost everybody hates the recorded sound of their own voice.
  7. Cats are evil! I've had dogs for the past 30 years. Started with Retrievers but I've downsized to Spaniels now.
  8. Given the oppressive heat, it's time for a popsicle
  9. According to LIVESTRONG.COM, "In general, drinking coffee on its own in moderation is good for your health." Although the caffeine in a cup of coffee can temporarily increase your blood pressure, it provides a large dose of antioxidants that may protect against heart disease, Alzheimer's and some forms of cancer. I'd go with the idea that plain coffee is better for you than the excessive sugar and variety of chemicals you'd get from Mountain Dew or any other soda. Of course, if you get your coffee from one of those sugary milkshake things like they sell at Starbucks then it's probably a toss-up. I've been drinking my coffee without cream or sweetener for the past 40 years or so and now I have an aversion to sweetened beverages. I usually go with two largish mugs in the morning. After that it's unsweetened tea, water or the occasional glass of stout On rare occasions I'll have a Coke or a glass of fruit juice, but that's usually when no other acceptable beverage is available. Juice (and those juice blends and drinks) tend to be mostly empty calories from the sugar that naturally occurs (or that gets added to things like Sunny D). Whole fruit is much more nutritious.
  10. That episode originally aired when I was 10 years old. 54 years later, I still vividly remember the nightmares I had that night. Rod Serling was a genius.
  11. Other than the webs being a little messy, spiders don't bother me. However; I think there's a primordial fear and loathing of snakes that crosses species. I've been known to scream like a little girl when surprised by a large snake and my dog gets upset when he sees a coiled up garden hose. Last month, this story got coverage for several weeks and they kept using the same still shot. I was ready to quit reading the news. http://www.wral.com/orange-county-man-bitten-by-king-cobra-out-of-hospital/15725206/

  17. More like "concussion waiting to happen"
  18. Here's my all-time favorite Christmas song. It's a pretty rude, but I just love it
  19. On May 25, 1977 I attended the first showing in my home town of the original Star Wars movie (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope). I found it to be amazing and captivating. I saw it at least 6 times that first year and I convinced my friends who weren't into Sci-Fi to come along with me to see it again. It's still one of my all time favorite films. I was really excited when The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980 and I looked forward to another amazing experience, but I ended up paying to see it 3 times before I was able to get through the entire film. The first time I ended up falling asleep in the movie theater . On reflection, it probably wasn't a good idea to sneek two bottles of beer into a movie after working all day on 2 hours sleep and a hangover. The second time I fell asleep in the movie theater again, but this time without the influences of alcohol or sleep deprivation . When I finally saw the entire film in one showing, I was disappointed . It didn't live up to the promise of the original film. By 1983 I'd bought a VCR and saw Return of the Jedi on VHS. I wasn't expecting as much from that one and so I ended up deciding that it was OK and better than The Empire Strikes Back. I think I saw The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones on VSH and by the time Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005 I'd switched to DVDs. They were OK films, but none of them were as good as the first. I've got all six movies on DVD now and I pull them out every couple of years and have a Star Wars marathon. I think they're more entertaining than the Star Trek movies but less entertaining than selected episodes from any of the Star Trek TV series. I'll wait to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it gets to Netflix or HBO or Showtime. From the trailers, the special effects look like they'll be better than in the previous movies, but it's the story line that will determine whether it's a good film or just more over-hyped rubbish.

  22. Doesn't anyone use Crisco anymore?
  23. I really enjoyed Mann Rambling's "Ship Logs of the Santa Claus" series of stories. dkstories (dkstories), Rob Colton and Rilbur all have some pretty good sci-fi stories posted to this site, although you have to pay for premium access to get to some of them
  24. In the US, 'pissed' means you're angry or upset about something. In the UK, it means your drunk. 'Pissed Off' means the same thing in both places
