  1. Either is fine as long as they're consistent. A hard ruleset that is suddenly broken is one of the few things that will make me stop reading a story. You can also have a story that starts off looking like a soft system, but then gradually reveals the rules as the story progresses.
  2. Beautiful. There are times when it's hard to see the rose through the darkness.
  3. yesterday wasn't a good day; hoping today will be better too much stuff to get done and the weather isn't helping w. the joints -- or the mold count
  4. Rain this morning and record low "high temp" for tomorrow -- which I'll take over a record high this time of year. SP and I both ache from the weather this morning. Little Man is getting around this morning better than we are now that the vet has him on something for his arthritis.
  5. Trying to wake up & get ready for work. Both SP and I have to physically go into the office this morning (at least), maybe longer.
  6. Federal thought (in the US) is that breaks / lunches will be a self-regulating system -- that if a company wants someone to work that long w/o getting a break no one would want to work there. An idealistic, but unrealistic, thought.

    Blooms

    Beautiful
  8. There's a slight twisting of reality for the purpose of the plot and then there are things like that that just throw you from the movie entirely. Sorry about the noise. Where mom lives, about a year ago, the older lady upstairs did who knows what at weird hours that sounded like elephants tap-dancing.
  9. That stuff was like shellac! Mom used to used it.
  10. Weather sounds familiar -- 93F, 54% humidity, and a heat index of 105F; but it's July, and could be a lot worse. Second batch of pickles sounds pretty good to me. I like sweet and crunchy pickles.
  11. Tornado season is never fun. Thankfully, our 1st one is over - our 2nd starts in Fall. On the swabs -- feels like they're trying to swab the back of your skull w. those those. "This might tickle" -- um, no. That wasn't a "tickle".
  12. Friday morning!! thankfully -- yesterday was a bit of a demoralizing day. I'll agree that working from home lets you hug your partner and get an emotional boost to keep going, but some things would be easier to take care of at the office. On the other hand, none of us in our Dept. are really ready to go back. They did get the plexiglass barriers up and in place on our desks so that's a good thing.
  13. Morning all. SP and I took the oldest dog to the vet a few days ago and got him a prescription anti-inflammatory for his arthritis. We'd tried to give him some over the counter stuff from a pet store but he wouldn't touch it, and it was apparently strong enough of a smell that when we tried to hide it in his food he wouldn't eat. Good news is the scrip from the vet is working. It's great to see him bounding about and moving more freely; he's obviously in a lot less arthritis pain.
  14. Worst of the storms mostly stayed just north of us. Large number of power outages, including an entire town of about 3,000. Radar recorded winds were also extreme -- when thunderstorms get large enough and start to fade out they can "collapse" and cause extremely strong wind speeds (normally 80 to 90 mph). One Doppler radar reading yesterday, which only lasted for a minute or two, was clocked at 142 mph! No damage at the house though there are other places in town where trees were blown down, and places north and west of here with a lot more damage.
  15. Listening to the nearby thunder as another summer storm moves just to the north of us -- which is just fine, as this one has 2" hail.
  16. Had an unusual July thunderstorm today. We need the rain, but the joints really did not like it.
  17. We have a chance of rain this morning, which is great because it's our last real chance for the next 20+ days; on the other hand it's making the joints ache. Hope everyone has a great day. I know I've been reacting to posts, but not responding recently; it's been a long and crazy week.

    Chapter 6

As Max said, "Using magic is about learning new ways to use your mind. In learning the ways of a new body, your mind makes the same sort of leaps it will need to do in order to grasp and use the new thought forms that come with mastering magic." That's what they were doing with learning to fly -- learning to stretch their thinking and be able to take the leaps of thought in order to master their own particular magics. I'm also curious what Ricky's roll in this is. Have a feeling it's more than just being a battery for Charlie.

    Chapter 5

Loved the chapter - both hopeful and sad at the same time.

    Chapter 2

A single, rather small, nuclear bomb exploding just one mile above the surface in the geographic center of the US would fry all unshielded electronics across the majority of the US. And, if you want to be really terrified of an entirely possible natural disaster, look up "Carrington Level Event."

    Chapter 2

Power, gas lines, water lines, all sorts of things in many places are many decades [or more] beyond their life expectancy. Was a lot of, "we'll take care of it later" and later only turns up when something shorts out, explodes, or bursts.

    Chapter 1

Sounds a bit like astral projection
  23. SP and I went up to see mom today. She was happy to finally meet him and the entire trip went quite well.
  24. Ooooohhhh.... "new magics"
