    I can't fly without being sedated, so I share your aversion to winged tin cans. Yes! I totally get this. And yeah... if we only knew then what we know now. But that's a part of life, I suppose. So I take it you will not be participating in the poetry anthology?

    Like... totally awesome, man. I'm fer sure glad you liked it 😁 I will admit to pinning my khakis and jeans, but am also proud to admit I never sported a big hairdo, even though many of my friends did. When I was in college, we called two of my classmates "big hair" and "little hair" because of their impressive coifs LOL

    The middle school I went to had a different presidential name, so I kept the theme.

    I love how the description of the various groups immediately lets the reader know which clique they fall into without explicitly naming them. I also love how we both went with our own personal experiences, and I found it very relatable.

    Ugh... stupid work! I want to stay up all night and binge-read this story, but noooo....I have to be responsible and get a good night's sleep in order to be a functioning member of society in the morning. Or do I...? Anyway, I'm loving this story so far and can't wait to read more!

    We didn't have much tech back then. Atari was the big new thing. Computers were a novelty and not widely used. No cell phones. I think I broke my intern's mind when she found out we had no cell phones as a kid 🤣

    Language is constantly evolving, especially when it comes to vernacular and younger generations. Valley girl speak was the "in" thing when I was in middle school... like... totally...yeah! I didn't embrace it as completely as some, because even back then, a lot of it just sounded dumb. I will admit to being completely in the dark as to a lot of modern phrases/words and either need to look them up or ask my student intern, but I won't get started on current generational differences.

    I believe they have changed it here to 6th-9th for middle school. They change it around depending on population trends. My parents went to the same high school I did, and they had a graduating class of about 2k, I believe, as compared to mine of about half that. I think there's even less now. They actually split the high school into two different ones for the baby boomers, and there was talk a few years ago about reconsolidating the two, but they were met with too much backlash.

    It sounds like different names for similar cliques. I think some things are pretty universal, regardless of time/location. Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks! I would have started middle school around 1982 or '83. I started high school in '86. The '80s were a great time to be a kid

    It's interesting how the terminology differs and has changed over time. Just a few years before me, we had junior high schools vs middle school. It was 5th-9th grade. Then they changed it to middle school and made it 6th-8th grade. My high school contained many of the same cliques, with the addition of the shop kids, who were learning a trade such as auto mechanics or how to be a beautician. We didn't have huge chocolate chip cookies, but they would have gone nicely with rectangular pizza and chocolate milk lol

    I agree with you completely about the subcultures still existing today. I believe they have different names, and there may even be more, but the same general principles apply. You are very right about the neutrals. We didn't have a name for them, but I was one of those also. I had friends across most of the groups, but didn't fit into any one particular group. I'm glad you could relate to this. Thanks for the great comment!

    March 6, 1983 I have started my third week observing the students of Kennedy Middle School. They’ve acclimated to my existence, so pay me no mind anymore. I finally feel I am observing them in their natural state. Table three continues to be the “jock table”, where mainly members of various sports teams congregate.     Thank you! I swear I feel like a kid at Christmas every time I see a display featuring items I collect. I try my best to maintain a poker face and not go immediately running over to it lol Needless to say, I did not inherit my mom's gift for haggling

    Yes, exactly! Good customer service equals repeat business, especially for niche collectors. I'm always happy to provide education about value to people willing to listen, and will reward that willingness with a purchase sometimes. If it's something I particularly want, I'm happy to pay retail price. I once bought a collectible off someone for a cheap price (what it was worth, although he had been erroneously told it was worth more) simply because he was willing to listen to me about that brand of collectibles. I didn't actually want it, but figured I would either donate it to a raffle or give it to a kid to play with.

    It's always nice when sentimental objects hold monetary value as well. It's a good thing your father rescued it!

    Thank you! Some of my fondest childhood memories are of going to antique shops and flea markets with my parents and brother and looking for treasures. I looked for animal figurines, while my brother looked for marbles. I guess I got the same gene. I'm glad you liked it!

    The only story I read this week was Cole Matthews' response to Prompt 121 (although technically I read it when he wrote it last week ). I suppose the due time for the anthology is 11:59:59 April 1st, but I'm not going to reject anything based on one second. I may be in the minority, but I'm perfectly fine with the change between DST and ST. Yes, it's annoying and takes some getting used to at first, but the longer daylight hours in the spring are nice to have. Of course, today I'm struggling with it more than usual due to having to adjust to AZ time, then back to NY time. And you actually spelled "bear with me" correctly, even if you meant the animal
