By it being a one size fits all problem, I mean that you can't treat people at high risk and people at low risk the same. It doesn't make sense for me to get screened the same way as my friend, or for the same thing.

Did you read the early-prevention results? I think this may have been linked. Early and frequent mammograms were found to increase detection rate, but didn't make as much of a dent in mortality rate as they should have done. One explanation was that some number of tumors resolve on their own, and the treatment that cascaded from detection of more tumors, without reference to type, brought its own mortality risks with it. It's a one-size-fits-all problem. I have a friend at familial risk for a very aggressive type of BC, and she's in an early-detection program, and in her case, even a month's delay could make the difference.

... What I'd be interested to know, in the US, is where the money comes from, and the assumptions about prescriptions. Because the "high risk" patients, as described above, don't necessarily match the people who actually qualify for employer healthcare plans. It depends on how the numbers shake out, and what they're expecting to make off Medicaid, which is notoriously difficult for patients to use.

PrEP is a tough one for me because there is no question that it underlines the inequities of American healthcare more than anything else I've ever come across. More than cancer, more than anything. Imagine a woman asking her insurance company for a drug that would reduce her risk of HIV because she could not rely on her partners to not use condoms.

Honestly curious, not trying to start a fight: what's the rationale for not using condoms? (edit: I meant, as provided by kids in their 20s today. I've heard lack of use is more common but I don't really understand what's different now) Edit: Never mind, that was stupid. Truvada site's definition is as follows: A lot of members of the above groups have low condom compliance anyway. If we're switching to single-payer in the US, there'll need to be cost assessments. Are there any publicly available for the high-risk population? I assume the marketing company presented something?

My feelings about gun ownership were formed in AZ when I worked in a school there, decades ago, before the current spate of school shootings. Parents were pushing handguns on children as young as 14, to take to school. I had a conversation with one veteran, a self-described "gun nut" who described how she kept her gun loaded with bullets with scooped-out tips in case she needed to fire into a crowd (again, her words) after an evildoer, a feat that I believe even military snipers hesitate to attempt. The household accidents, and the self-justifications, and the drunken accidents, and the waving guns at strangers---I've never seen anything like it. And I've never seen anything to make me think I want to share that kind of life. Incidentally, as a brown-skinned person, I've never been as scared anywhere as in AZ.

I feel like I never ever want to hear any more about the Aceto love lives. I can't freaking believe that I, born Muslim, have to preach pig-eating to people whose heritage it is. You must eat pig, folks. It's what kept your ancestors alive! Self-foraging, high calorie, rapidly breeding high fat high protein grow-on-anything goodness! It's the grassroots protein source! What do you even think bacon is about if not surviving winter as efficiently as possible?

I think if you're eating it for energy the way people used to then you'd need it to stay chewy and retain some fat. Everyone at my house likes it crisp. Edit: I'm absolutely fascinated by what a great source of protein pigs have been, historically.

I did sign but I'm guessing the network hasn't tried removing RoERTson because they figure no one watches anyway, which can't be far from the truth. My kids don't watch 700 Club but if they did, they'd come to me freaking out that a mean man was saying gay people can't have flowers. I'm guessing Robertson's views are more easily absorbed by kids who are cut off from the world and secular life.

Here I come with my little hatchet. Negatives: I think something is a little bit off about the description of the sex, although I may be alone in this. The focus on their successful accomplishment of perfect oral sex seemed to reduce some of the intimacy of their lovemaking, in my eyes. That's just me, though. Positives: the teasing, especially the way Kendall calls Michael "Bonnie Boy" when he's talking about Colleen. That is SO true to life I got a little bit annoyed. Kendall and Michael and the labeling. The "I wanted to ask to move in with you but I didn't want you to think I just wanted sex"--Michael really is priceless! Michael innocently calling Kendall "Babe" in front of his parents and everyone pretending not to notice . Michael's awkward, beautiful introduction of himself and Kendall as a couple. "Goofy grin met goofy grin."

Wow, he's adorable with the beard. I like his sad little eyebrows too

I just love how quietly realistic, sappy and cozy this chapter is, right down to "You're better looking!" "No, you are!" It's an eventful chapter on an emotional level, and I really like how you make the small actions, like restrained sighs or curling into someone's shoulder, mean something.

Pitch-perfect, Sasha. This is probably my favorite chapter of my favorite of all your stories.

I think there's a valid point being made here... what's going to happen if the KKK take a look at the flag, think it makes a great recruiting tool given their falling #s, and start a chapter (or whatever it's called) that goes out to do their cross-burnings in rainbow robes? What then??? There's no requirement that gays have to be of any one political view.
