Getting the test is a good idea. Since I suffer from gout, I can tell you a bit about it.
First, if it is gout, treat it fast. The longer it remains untreated, the more frequent and severe the future attacks become. Before I started treatments for it, I had bouts like 5 to 6 times a year that lasted from a few days to a week or more.
Since diagnosis and treatment, I only have one or two bouts a year. They usually last one day and are much less painful. I don't even see the doctor any more except to renew the prescription. I get twelve pills, and they last me for over a year since I usually only take 2 to 3 each time I need them. I take two pills when I first feel the pain coming on, then one the next day if the pain persists. I always have pills left over when I get new pills to replace the expired pills, so the cost is very cheap.
Mayo Clinic has a great deal of information online about gout if you need more information.
