Thank you very much for reading this chapter. I’m glad you could see as Rick did. It is indeed an awful memory, and it clearly haunts Rick as effectively as any specter could.
Thank you for reading this difficult chapter. If you could sense some of what Rick lived through, then his reluctance to set foot in Cedarcrest again could be understood. His memories clearly have a lot of weight still.
Thanks for taking on this tough chapter. Rick's vulnerabilities must have been visible to Willy - enough to mark him as prey. The ghosts that remain at Cedarcrest have been with him ever since.
Willy used Rick in so many horrible ways. He craved the older boy's attention, and perhaps some of the glow that seemed to attend him. Rick carries that summer with him still. You're so right that places hold memories and echoes far longer than any might suspect. You're most kind to have read this difficult chapter.
I really liked your observations about Willy. While this isn’t his story, it’s clear he must have noticed Rick, and took some time to be watchful. The after effects of this chapter come to us through Rick’s eyes and internal voice. Thank you very much for reading!
Thank you for reading this most difficult chapter. Rick’s life changed that summer, and especially that day. Willy was predatory, as you say; Rick’s experience with him was devastating.
Once again, Rick sighed. The North Shore Road meandered willfully, like an ill-trained puppy, as it vaguely followed the inlets and outcrops of Eagle Lake. Most times, he was perfectly happy to be out on a job, alone with his thoughts. This was not one of them. Damn Rita McKee. Damn Kohlers. Damn their stupid lodge. Damn me for being such a fucking doormat.
He couldn't believe he was headed to Cedarcrest Lodge. That was the name old man Kohler's father gave to the place. I
The humor in this chapter lightens the whole story, and I welcomed it with a wide smile. Poor Sawyer, unable to manage Jimmy's introduction to Maddie, can now dread every moment until Sunday Lunch. And then there's the little matter of Jimmy's work for Fergus; how will that escape the coming interrogation? Or maybe Fergus will inadvertently torpedo the lunch with urgent work than only Jimmy can do.
The time for honest, real conversation is now. Time to take that opportunity. Time to figure out the truth and live in the present, not the past. Great setup for what might come next.
It’s unfathomable to me that parents can turn their backs on their grown children, and further freeze out their adoptive grandchildren. Good for Evie for sending her parents packing.
