  1. Sometimes I think the experience of the back field should be compulsory. That’s hogwash, I know, for not everyone finds the delights and sights of the meadow as fascinating as I do. Fawns, trapdoor spiders, baby blue veronica, flocks of robins at dusk - these are treasures for heart and memory. Thank you for reading!
  2. I hope it is a very long time until real snow replaces June’s cottonwood flurries. There are so many things to take pleasure in, it’s hard to pack them all into a single poem. Perhaps you are lucky enough to experience some of the things mentioned here, for then it might feel as if we’re sharing them. Thanks for reading these.
  3. I’m very glad you could share the back field and the cottonwood snow with me. There has been lots of slow time to appreciate them while weeding or walking. Thank you.
  4. Thank you. I'm glad you liked the summer meadows and June snow.
  5. Echoes Swallows dive over riffled water gossiping about the mourning doves; mottled sycamores soar, embracing cloudless dawn, and cottonwood snow marks my midsummer mornings, its downy seeds strewn among daisies and yawning primroses like snowdrifts reminding the radiant sunshine of winter. The Back Field There are pleasures waiting in the long grass, unexpected treasures in tiny blue-eyed flowe

I am so jealous. Not only do the Dads get to go to see the Lakers, they score prime tickets to see Chipper perform, and they get Zion and Bryce on speed dial. Geez. Some guys have all the luck. And $500 speeding tickets. Awesome chapter!

    Chapter 6

You describe an emotionally brutal situation. What’s amazing is how simply Jada and Sawyer come to the realization of what must be next. There are tears, but no rage.
  8. Preferential treatment? Nonsense. It’s just a matter of delivering what a student needs. Why do I suspect Miss Dooli is in for a promotion?
  9. @northie Who was it who said that the only constant in life is change? Incremental change is often the sneakiest of all. It would probably be difficult to leave funeral instructions to include the laughter of little children, but if I could, that’s what I’d want.

You’re right about the difference in categories of chores, I agree. It’s much more internally satisfying to work at chores which benefit one’s beloved, or even a broader group of others.

    Chapter 1

Not a neat and tidy story, but one as ragged as a nasty storm. Well done!
  12. You are immensely kind. You have captured the path along the creek perfectly in your comment. Like you, I find the ebb and flow of this form allows adaptation to the topic. Thanks so much for reading!

How I enjoy traveling with the Dads. Wine, good company, a soupcon of revenge, sweet companionship, what a great vacation. The upgrade to a Lamborghini seemed to backfire, sort of. I appreciated your description of Brett getting pulled over. That kind of speed can make the tires melt: I wonder if the car rental agency takes that into account? If there’s enough legroom, I’ll hitch a ride in the back seat!
  14. It does seem to need repeated readings to get fully lodged in the brain, I agree. As a teacher, I want to be like that tree - something many new trees spring from. Thanks for reading this.
  15. It certainly seems wonderfully persistent. Thanks so much for reading!
  16. I really liked what you said about needing to let this poem settle. It’s amazing now - the old tree is giving birth to dozens of new shoots, it’s like a cottonwood hedge. Wandering along the creek never ceases to bring new sights to wonder at. Thanks for trying out this experiment with me.
  17. I love these. The first is wonderful, elegaic, and brings images of brightness and laughter to me. The second surrounds me in silver light, in quiet and reflection. Thank you.
  18. Along the Creek The cottonwoods are falling one by one no longer standing tall beneath the sun but prostrate do they lie and never will the west wind make them sway that now the forest litter and decay no more to touch the sky. So few among their number still remain with arms outstretched to catch the falling rain, the lonely waters weep; their sorrow spreading swiftly ‘cross the glen, a dark reflecting pool beyond our ken,

    Lisa’s Idea

Nick got into a terrible bind, but it’s not a situation entirely of his own making. Once he sorts himself out, Nick can decide about what to say to Lisa, and what conversation Ethan might have with her. But real life may not bear blowing up a friendship like that. Great story.
  20. Happy Birthday, Val! May your day be delightful.

Wonderful reading, this chapter. Nice to see Nalbo getting his butt handed to him on a platter. Even better to see my favorite dads enjoying their time together. Now I wonder what they’ll get up to in SF? Oh, and count me on the Clippers side. I have my reasons.

    Accused

I very much enjoyed reading this story on a tough topic. I’ve known others accused in very much this way. It can completely explode one’s life, shattering it into tiny shards. Thank you for this.

    Hill of Candles

This was an excellent, couldn’t-stop-reading story. Every scene left me wanting to see what’s next. And I was delighted with the way you completed things. Thank you!
  24. I’m really glad you liked these. It was fun playing with the patterns, maybe because I’m such a math nerd. Thank you for reading these and letting me know what you thought.

    Chapter 4

Fergus certainly sounds like a controlling A-type personality. Your dialogue and description show a character who might be hard to like. I’m not sure how I feel about Fergus, but he certainly seems to wear the mantle of leadership uneasily.
