  1. Finally, indeed. Andy and Zander’s coming together was such a release to write.
  2. I’ve left Zander’s coming out to Kaz and Terry to the imaginations of readers. Perhaps that’s a shortcoming; it’s implied that he told Kaz after Homecoming, but I didn’t write that scene. Zander isn’t out to anyone else, but I expect that girl made him regret his inaction. In any case, I left it unclear if Kaz and Terry are talking about Zander and her, or Zander and Andy being a good couple. That’s for the new year. Thanks very much for reading, and for your thoughts.
  3. This was a beautiful story. I could see the tracks and embankment, and hear the quiet sounds of the day where once all was noise and pain and death. The interaction between Dirk and Woodrow felt fresh and engaging. Thanks for this story.
  4. Thank you so much for reading through to the very end. I’m very happy you did. Andy and Zander have been living at the farm long enough that word must have gotten around. Reed knew just where to go. Once again, thank you for all your comments and reactions.

    Chapter 1

Your excellent satire ran smack into my own stupidity.

    The Purple Door

I loved this. The word pictures you painted were bright and vivid - including the purple door. Wonderful.
  7. There's an interesting thought that did not occur to me at the time of writing. Would Andy want to reconnect with his bio-dad? I don't know. I think if he did, it would be at a farther future time, when he feels fully safe and settled. Maybe in his 20's, and making his way in the world. What I do know is that Zander would be with him in making that connection.

    Chapter 1

I confess, like @Bill W, I didn’t determine the identities of Lizzie and Chas until they were rubbed in my face. But what a delightful send-up this is! I enjoyed it thoroughly.
  9. I’m sorry, at least a little bit, about the cliffhanging. But at least we know it wasn’t Phyllis Chandler waiting for Andy. What a day he’s had! And it’s not even over. Thanks so much for reading and for your comments.
  10. I had to laugh at your thoughts on “Walter.” No doubt it’s a family name, and it’s thoroughly out of fashion. Yet the family doggedly sticks to it. I imagine Kaz stuck with it, at least with his family. I’m grateful for your reading of Maria, Zander’s oldest sister. Not everyone grasped what I was aiming at in this minor character. Frank was fun to write for, and at least he managed to make Zander talk freely far into the night. You were spot on with Carol. Monica may have been correct, in that a real traditional wedding, however rushed, would bring the family together. Thanks for your observations and for reading!
  11. @raven1 It is indeed a sprint of a week. Time has seemed to telescope down from weeks into days, and hours into minutes. Kaz has done a great deal to help boost Andy's confidence. The result of his race was just icing on the cake. The family dinner indeed awaits. Poor Andy still must feel as if he's going before a firing squad, or maybe through an interrogation. Thank you very much for your responses and for reading.
  12. You're absolutely correct about the support and concern reflected in that maddening question which gives the chapter its name. Yet the question is necessary, even as each reiteration seems only to reaffirm the answer. Mrs. Marjorie finally got a little bit of a surprise, which was fun to spring on her. She always seems so much in the know, as if she predicted every outcome. Except maybe this one. As for Andy's dreams, he may have to work through them as best he can. Events are moving forward. Thanks continuing to read Andy's journal, and for your many comments.
  13. This was indeed a feel-good kind of chapter. I'm glad that it's believable that Eustace should support Andy and Zander; I turned several possible plot paths over in my mind as I was planning out this chapter. There was no doubt that the actual reunion would be emotional for both Andy and Eustace. It was important to show how events also affected Zander. Thanks very much for your thoughts and for reading.
  14. Andy's blood pressure and heart rate must have gone way down after realizing why Ambrose was there. Reestablishing contact with Eustace must make Andy happy, though, as well as the old man. You're quite right that Eustace was fond of Andy. There's so much for Andy to think about as a result of being discovered. It's funny, but I never considered Andy instigating a lawsuit against the Carlsberg schools. Perhaps that would bring back too many hard memories. In any case, that would be a discussion for him to have with Garrett at some future point. Thanks for bringing that up!
  15. Garrett and Andy's lawyer might be called on to defend him. Ambrose's appearance is definitely ominous. I'm very, very happy you liked the rings - I put not a small amount of thought into them. Thanks again for reading and commenting.
  16. I suspect his sleep was deep, long and satisfying.
  17. I think the chasm opening up between Andy and his friends is due in part to Andy withdrawing into himself, and in part to his friends taking an easy way out by giving him space. You're right that this is something that could happen between teens, but it's still an unhappy setback. Thanks for your thoughts.
  18. Roger Green Hat was a vindictive drunk - and far too good a stand-in for Andy's father. Things were going too well.
  19. Hang onto your hat. Your concerns are justified.
  20. Kaz certainly seems like a good guy, and a man you’d want in your corner. But running? That’s all Andy’s been doing, it seems. Thanks again for reading!
  21. Andy’s certainly leery too. More and more, report cards are made available online. However, physical copies are still mailed home, the new coexisting with the old. Thanks for your thoughts, and for reading!
  22. I'm so happy you kept reading Andy's journal - so that the title makes some kind of sense. Thank you!
  23. It was unexpected, and yet a completely sure way of keeping Phyllis Chandler from exacting any kind of revenge. Other readers have commented with justification that marriage isn't for kids, it's for adults. They have a good point. However, this might possibly be one of those rare cases in which an exception is warranted to that general rule. In any case, it would certainly put the bigots on the back foot. Thanks very much for reading, and for your continuing comments.
  24. Nope. Bruce is not known for his intelligence. Terry probably won't have to deal him a knockout blow - he'll deflate all by himself. This was a very satisfying chapter to write. How is wish there were more Judge Harrisons in this country. Thank you very much for your comments, and above all, thank you for reading.
  25. I'd say that Andy is scared - and we have seen that he holds stuff in when that happens sometimes. Phyllis Chandler is certainly high-handed and bigoted; she a bully used to getting what she wants. What's unfortunate is that there are plenty of people like her in positions of power all over the country - in school boards, child welfare agencies, even in governors' mansions. Andy is very lucky to have Garrett and Judge Harrison in his corner. Thanks very much for your thoughts.
