  1. North-northeast I sped into the dawn, through sleepy towns and just-woke meadows, challenging the hours to pass quicker than the miles could silence signal and cast off care, while the rocks and trees change their clothing. Melville sailed with me before the wind, faster than any clipper he knew, passing through a school of hulking Winnebagoes, tacking to port past eighteen wheelers, sharing the long grey seas o
  2. Mitch Willard would make a fine neighbor, and one who wouldn’t have any qualms about Coy and Boone being together. I’m looking forward to finding out the source of Mitch’s antipathy toward Will Merrick.

The judge is giving Liam’s barrister plenty of scope for appeal. And the jury by now must have figured out that Rhys wasn’t a model student, whatever the prosecution may have asserted. But even so, these are scant rays of hope for Liam.

I will continue, and the search is on for suitable rhyme words.

    Chapter 35

Feels so much better to say it, doesn’t it Jack? I really enjoyed this chapter and its increasing tension right to the end.

I’m glad these resonate in your ear. I was apprehensive about them. Thank you very much for reading these, and for considering them.

    Inventions

This form is my own invention, and I wasn’t at all sure what readers would think. Your comments are encouraging, though there may be enough changes in line length and rhythm to make me pause, if you found them distracting. The idea of a dance is intriguing. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I’m grateful you read these.

I’m so very glad you think the rhyme schemes and rhythms work. Your comments are wonderfully encouraging. Thank you!

One Open now that yellowed book, oft desecrated by the fools who read its verses and avow its text and meaning so conflated with their bigotries and curses; in your search belated find Love which in all immerses, equal in each heart it nurses any it sees mated, asking neither why nor how, simply wholeness to allow. The story

Perhaps I chose my words poorly. I simply meant that the description of Mike’s neighborhood seemed like a tree-lined suburban street; the kind of place that looks like a pleasant, safe community. As you’ve shown us, there’s a lot that’s unseen there, things to make one pause and reflect, if not fear.
  12. So Sherriff Mitch made what he thought might be his death march. Instead, he’s breathing easier and can rest a bit in comfort with real friends. That’s hard to beat. But what’s going on with his knowing the sawyer?

    The story

Fear is the place many kids live. Anyone can be a resident in fearfulness, and we may all have visited there for various reasons or lengths of time. Your story about Mike is heartening, even as you walk us with him through his leafy, almost idyllic, existence. You’ve shown him come alight, dispelling shadows for other kids too. That made me smile.

And so we have a hanging judge, and a psychiatrist who is on the make. And indeed, where is Miss James, or anyone who can push back against those who so firmly press their thumbs on the scales of justice?

Again, I wept: why could the jury not hear what was all of the plain truth? Surely that’s what matters. And yet, in the midst of all the legal point-scoring, the truth of Liam’s life got lost. All that’s left is a one dimensional cardboard cutout of the truth.

I wonder that Liam’s lawyer didn’t prepare him for these moments. They’re critical in helping judge and jury form a favorable - or, at least, neutral - opinion. It’s hardly surprising that Liam feels lost here.
  17. I envy you your butterfly bushes. How wonderful you can grow them successfully. Here, I rely on tithonia, climbing beans, borage, and blooming herbs and vegetables to attract butterflies to plants that need pollination. In the flower beds, phlox, globe thistles and loosestrife call to them. I’m glad you can see the field and gardens, and enjoy these most marvelous creatures with me. Thanks very much for your comments!
  18. You have made my day, knowing that this story has become part of you, and that it speaks to you still. It’s not weird at all - there are some stories that have done the same for me over so many years. Thank you so very much!
  19. I’m so glad you took the time to read all the way through Andy’s journal. While he still must cope with the cares and stresses of his past, his future seems open to joy and promise. He and Zander have made a home in one another, and that must lift the hearts of everyone who knows them. Thank you so very much for reading, and for leaving a comment.
  20. Thank you! They’re delightful to watch and they distract me from weeding.
  21. I hope there will be more for your eyes to catch this summer. I’m glad you could see mine with me. Thank you so much for your comments.
  22. Thank you for observing butterflies with me. The swallowtails and viceroys are flitting about the loosestrife and globe thistles just now, and the Aphrodites have been drawn to the borage and summer squashes in addition to the calendulas. These creatures are works of art.
  23. I’m so glad these brought back some happy memories. There are white cabbage moths, which may be great pests. The azures can look similar in the right light. There are more butterflies this year than in previous summers. I’m hopeful that’s a good sign.

Sulphur butterflies flit amongst the violas, dancing for nectar. *** Monarchs munch milkweed in the sun-soaked high meadow, preparing to nap. *** Mourning cloaks emerge with the first red maple buds, savoring the spring. *** Bronze Aphrodites crowd the bright calendulas, waving with the breeze. *** Small summer azures flutter out of the t
