Late Spring
In the woods,
carcasses of old trees
lie strewn upon a thousand autumns,
ancient oaks’ bones mixed up with newly downed beeches,
their hymns to the west wind forgotten
by new buds and the deep,
silent moss.
From the hill,
the world’s frantic frenzy
appears but a minor commotion;
the maples’ first hot blush at bold spring’s advances
sets scandalized robins atwitter,
yet they yield to the fiel
I’m most grateful for this new chapter. Jaxson and Luke, both living with the vigilant and belligerent Cindy, refuse to buckle under the load. But what was Jaxson thinking by not opening big envelopes from universities? And how could his coaches not counsel him about this sooner? Looking forward to more!
Liam is well and truly caught in the machinery of justice. Perhaps his solicitor can help see that the gears and cogs don’t completely chew him up, or perhaps not. His mother seems perfectly capable of feeding him straight into its maw without batting an eye. Then again, it doesn’t appear as if she ever had a whole lot of feeling for her son. Only Miss James looks like a solid and kind soul.
Alas, they had to leave the game at that point. But things looked like they might be improving for Gus and Rick; I might put my money on the Brewers. Thanks for reading!
Rick’s could quit; his skills are portable. However, his tools and parts aren’t, they go with the business, and they’d be expensive to replace. It’s possible that Rick has dithered over quitting because of this kind of thing. But you’re right, even the threat that Rick might quit would give Heinrich Senior pause. Thanks again for reading!
Thank you for saying so. I have felt that sting, too. Rick has had a lifetime of missteps and humiliations. I’m grateful for your comments and for reading.
You have made a grey day brighter in your kind words. Rick and Gus are characters who got under my skin; it was hard to let them go, but it’s wonderful knowing they are playing their music happily in many readers’ hearts. Thanks so much for reading, and for your encouraging comments.
Pastor Peeping Simpson seems sick and deranged to me. @weinerdog had a good point in that it seems foolish to have put Matt and Charles together if he wanted to cure them of attraction to other boys. Are we certain his video footage doesn’t give the pastor a certain pleasure? I shudder to think about it.
The sun has dimmed and the birds are silent with this news. Wayne was wonderful to work with and read for. His prompts spurred me to write a series of short stories, and it’s not done yet. I will miss him very much.
Oh, Liam, now you’ve gone and done it; and the police will see you crucified for it, no matter what the people in school say. Liam’s life path is wholly different to what he’d hoped. But will anyone besides Liam learn anything from this?
What a great story! Ron and Abe both had fears that have colored their relationship for too long. Good for Ron to jump on a plane and surprise Abe. Jesse must have been a ray of sunshine for them both.
Liam’s story makes me weep. His experience is all too common. Rhys finds tormenting another person to be far too entertaining to think about what he might be doing, let alone stopping. School and community attention matter; clearly they failed Liam.
You’re quite correct; I should have said half the remaining frosting, if I wanted exactitude. This geometric problem is fun to pose to students; it was even more fun to present in story form. Thanks for trying it out.
