To The Old Spruce and At a Gallop
Parker Owens commented on Parker Owens's story chapter in To The Old Spruce and At a Gallop
@AC BenusYou’re not wrong; only now have they blossomed. That mighty spruce is still there today, and I watched the moon set over it this very morning while Orion looked on. And indeed, the second sonnet recalls a most memorable ride. Thanks so much for your help with these, and for reading them anew. -
To The Old Spruce and At a Gallop
Parker Owens posted new chapter in Disasters, Delights and Other Detours
To the Old Spruce Behold the regal trunk, how high it grows sprung forth from waters spoken by the word, that syllable from which new life arose and echoed ere Poseidon ever stirred. The breath of heaven whispers in its spire while cheerful creatures play on every bough of deepest green the eye and heart admire which summer’s heat with shade it will endow. Yet now its courtiers’ robes lie on the ground; soon winter -
Chapter 7 A Bark with No Bite
Parker Owens commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 7 A Bark with No Bite
Bless Coy, who won’t give up. Bless Mitch and Will, fools who won’t take the precious gift they have now. Bless Boone for putting up with all of them.- 66 comments

Thanks for nothing, mum. Now let Liam’s barrister try to file an appeal. Good luck with that. So the Special Hospital will be Liam’s next landing place. Seeing as there have been remarkably few people in his life with any actual power to help him, I fear for what this experience will teach him.

I’m immensely grateful for your gentle and lengthy response to this set. It is wonderful, and wise, and deserves a wider audience. Perhaps in a blog or essay? I envy you your Cabernet and stars, and your view of snowflakes piling themselves up. I like how you measure time in terms of things accomplished or still to be accomplished. It would take an eternity for all those things to transpire, I think - an infinity. But that concept must wait for math class, or another poem. I thank you most deeply for your thoughts and encouragement.

You and Stefan could fill a notebook with big questions several times over. He’s had too many harrowing and horrible experiences to be certain of anything except the need to survive. Thank you for reading this most difficult set of passages, and for your questions .

It’s good to share these with everyone, and better to know what I feel is not unique. If I shiver, then I’d prefer to do so together. Thank you for reading these, and for your thoughts. xo

You’ve given us (especially me) a particularly effective form for observations and thoughts. It is often my go-to form. Thank you for reading these, and for such kind responses.

I have such trouble undoing old habits and shedding old dislikes and foibles. I could not help writing about that. Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging thoughts.

You have spoken exactly how I feel; yet I know I’m not 35 anymore. Even so, I have so much to learn. Thanks for reading and responding to these.

I’m glad you felt stirred at what you saw, and for your comments. Many thanks.

There are times when melancholy grips me, and writing poetry helps me move through it. The passage of time - aging - certainly triggers these episodes. ‘Five decades’ describes a thread in my existence that haunts and badgers me. Thank you for commenting and for reading.

This format was invented by @AC Benus, who called it a Skyscraper. He shared his creation with me; it was and remains a most marvelous gift. I’m glad these touched you. Thank you very much for reading, and for your comments.

Once a year, when the dogs have their days and stars play with a young summer moon, we celebrate a whole calendar’s worth of days passing as swift as bloodroot blossoms, bright and evanescent, soon to fade. Undoing habits of a lifetime, like squinting to peer close at fine print and groping for my glasses once the bed is made, or hiding behind clouded lenses will take many more years than I’ve got.

Stefan has managed to resist when he can, often passively, often stubbornly. Survival is his main goal each day, and doubly so at moments like these. But this is as bad as it has ever been.

Chapter 6 Started with a Posse
Parker Owens commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 6 Started with a Posse
Will and Mitch know that the other is nearby. Mitch seems to want things all on his terms, but there’s got to be some possibility they can meet halfway on things, right? Please?- 46 comments

Given the slant and heavily skewed trial, one can hardly have expected anything different from the jury. Now Liam must be sentenced, and I suppose there will be pressure to see him sentenced as an adult. Yet we know he will one day be paroled.

There’s so much that’s disturbing in this chapter: Luke turning Jackson aside, the not-wholly-comfortable vibe at the after-after-party, and the wrath of Cindzilla. I fear that wrath is permanent, implacable and destined to hurt Luke at least as much as it does Jackson. I fear for them both.

Diverted and Invitation
Parker Owens commented on Parker Owens's story chapter in Diverted and Invitation
The phone is a liar and a tease. It’s no real friend. I’d much rather spend my afternoon with my friend in person. Someday it may be possible to do this more easily, and without apprehension. Thanks very much for reading these, and for your thoughts. -
Diverted and Invitation
Parker Owens commented on Parker Owens's story chapter in Diverted and Invitation
I love that you used the word savoured. Sometimes, reading a poem aloud brings out flavors and textures in words that I’d miss in silent reading. Hugs and thanks for reading these, and for your encouragement. -
Diverted and Invitation
Parker Owens commented on Parker Owens's story chapter in Diverted and Invitation
I’m very happy you came back again to these. You’re quite right about Invitation. It seemed like a perfect late afternoon/late summer sonnet. The phone is the worst mirror; it’s neither always true, nor reliable. I wish I could throw mine away sometimes. Thank you very much for your comments! -
Diverted I'm greeted in the morning by the sight: a dull reflection mimics every move; there is no picture there, nor image bright, and now I see how hard today will prove. Each day is different, yet this simple glance can change the course of living in a trice from bleak despair to such a happy dance, depending whether what I see is nice. This glass upon the world I call my own will never heal it's cracked and silvere

Chapter 5 Sweet-talking Ways
Parker Owens commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 5 Sweet-talking Ways
Well, now it’s all plain and in the open, or most of it is, anyhow. If Mitch and Will can set aside two decades of separation and anger for an hour, and if Will can accept Mitch’s fading health, maybe they can finish their days happier than they started.- 64 comments

And so the jury has the case to decide. The judge made it quite clear what he thought, and hobbled the defense to suit. If the jury finds Liam guilty of manslaughter, that in itself would seem a miracle.

I’d agree that Spikey had a reasonable point. Yet, just as it’s possible (though improbable) for multiple safety system mechanisms to fail in a billion dollar spacecraft, it’s also possible for multiple so-called responsible adults to fail in learning to know one priceless teenager. Ackerman’s value as a jock seems to outweigh any intrinsic worth Stefan may possess.
