Mitch taking off to go hunting was a real gift for Boone and Coy. They could clear their own air without restraint, both under the shade of their tree and in their bed. They could speak with Will with less to go unsaid. Still, it’s up to Will to hunt Mitch down and get matters better squared up than they are now. These are scenes I’m looking forward to.- 82 comments

In number 1, I hear the sea, scent the tide and sense the passage of time. I liked how you appealed to my senses so easily. In number 2, I felt the touch of your hand; my heart eased. In number 3, I remain joined in spirit with you even across a wide distance. You write with such grace as I can only envy.

Eric is back! And as wry and self-conscious as ever, it seems. Although he appears to make himself difficult to know, those who make the effort make a solid, enduring friend.

Here you posit a whole new creation story; with the creator as frail, yet full of hope, and kindness embodied in others who share this world. Eric probably hasn’t even thought in that direction, though he has plenty of time to reflect in. Mostly, he must concentrate on his hurts and his circumstances. But I delight in your suggestions. Thanks for nothing, mum. Now let Liam’s barrister try to file an appeal. Good luck with that. So the Special Hospital will be Liam’s next landing place. Seeing as there have been remarkably few people in his life with any actual power to help him, I fear for what this experience will teach him.

I’m immensely grateful for your gentle and lengthy response to this set. It is wonderful, and wise, and deserves a wider audience. Perhaps in a blog or essay? I envy you your Cabernet and stars, and your view of snowflakes piling themselves up. I like how you measure time in terms of things accomplished or still to be accomplished. It would take an eternity for all those things to transpire, I think - an infinity. But that concept must wait for math class, or another poem. I thank you most deeply for your thoughts and encouragement.

There are times when melancholy grips me, and writing poetry helps me move through it. The passage of time - aging - certainly triggers these episodes. ‘Five decades’ describes a thread in my existence that haunts and badgers me. Thank you for commenting and for reading.

Once a year, when the dogs have their days and stars play with a young summer moon, we celebrate a whole calendar’s worth of days passing as swift as bloodroot blossoms, bright and evanescent, soon to fade. Undoing habits of a lifetime, like squinting to peer close at fine print and groping for my glasses once the bed is made, or hiding behind clouded lenses will take many more years than I’ve got.
