That's certainly part of the definition of a story. But of course, there are authors who work to subvert that. Not me, I hasten to add.

Thank you, Gary. This challenge is just that - something to be written to a prompt and to have an exact word count. As you might expect, some of my efforts are better than others.

    Catfishing

I agree with Puppi absolutely. I'm naturally very reticent, one who stands on the edges watching everything going on. I think long and hard before revealing anything personal to an online correspondent. And I tend not to engage with public displays of emotion unless I know the person beforehand. Thanks to all who work out of the goodness of their hearts to keep this site safe and a friendly place to be.
  4. Fascinating replies. While this sort of alternative world isn't my cup of tea, I did enjoy reading the opening chapters.

Thanks, drought. It does indeed have movement but since there's no one character, maybe the arc is what's missing. Anyway, as I said, while liking it, I suspect it didn't meet the brief.

Jostling boys kneel, letting paper vessels fall onto a fast-flowing spring. They rush alongside. "Look!" "Yes!" Watch as one after another fails. "Aagh..." "Nooo!" Foolscap wrecks; sodden testimonies to unsound work. "What?!" "Can't be!" Then fall quiet as one remaining papyrus yacht sails proudly by.

I'll leave it to you to decide.

Thank you! You are very kind to say so. The third volume will appear some time later next year.

    In The Limelight

Yes, I think that's the perfect way to describe it. As we heard in an earlier chapter, Eric's more than capable of seeing off unwanted phone calls. And it's not as if he has any social media presence.

    Oneself

With a little more context, perhaps.
  11. Thanks, Gary. I'm pleased my poem made that conection with you.
  12. I don't remember having those keys in mind at all when I wrote this. But very true.
  13. or in too many other places around the world. Thanks for reading this.
  14. My geologist brother would love this; as did I. I have to say that selection of prompts would have me scratching my head. You not only fulfilled all the criteria; you made a complete story out of it, one entirely characteristic of you. This made me grin; I say exactly the same thing. I think us readers would like you to write a few more prompts...
  15. Keys are universal Keys are mine alone Keys are release Keys are restraint Keys are freedom’s joy Keys are safety’s bars Keys are routes into new worlds Keys are instruments of repression Keys are hope given new life Keys are old regrets buried Keys are submission, freely given Keys are equality, grudgingly allowed Keys are music to the ears Keys are silence imposed Keys can be weapons, used for good or ill

Even if he does react to some of them with gruffness (pretend or otherwise) . One way of disguising his emotions.

I love this. Thanks, Def. As commented on elsewhere, queer society is, or is perceived to be, even more youth orientated than socity at large. Older LGBTQ individuals have as much right as anyone else to be present at Pride and elsewhere. Quite apart from anything else, they are the reason queer youth have the freedoms and acceptance they enjoy.

    Adventure

People can be so nervous about public transport, can't they? It's usually women who put their fears into words; guys don't for the most part.

    Pride of Place

'Courage' is a wonderful word to describe our hero's actions. How much of this must be needed to change your life as much as he has?

    Lacking Means

My thought is that would make her feel cornered, even less able to admit whatever was going on between her and her husband. She has to make the first move.

    Wiped Out

However he feels it's left a metaphorical hole in his pocket. Having fun costs money, but he doesn't regret it. That is a considerable change for the better.

    Forgotten?

Yes; in a way, the story is about Andy's personal development as well as Eric's. Of course, Eric has farther to travel, but as this chapter shows, Andy still has some distance to go.

    Adventure

You get it a lot more in rural towns where there's not the thought that a stranger is someone to be regarded with suspicion. At least the chapters are there, waiting for you to read them.

    Shattered

Or something. And later, more general films which depict hyper-masculinity and violence without consequence - physical, emotional, or psychological.
