I do seem to pick my chapter when I dip in. For a guy who claims not to have any time for fuzzy emotions, you do pretty damn well. Now I understand where the volume title comes from.

Thanks, Tim. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think Geoff is a convert to holidays, especially with Tony. When all you have is difficult memories from childhood, it is sometimes tricky to move on. Police forces in the UK are geared up to treat hate crimes as such, but when set against a background of decreasing resources, you do wonder how much attention it would get. My suspicion is Tony won't want all the bother associated with reporting and following through the incident. In Helen's words, Geoff indeed "did good" with the defence of his partner.

You have to admit it was pretty dramatic for me. Not saying much perhaps, but it got around, plenty of characters, and even some action.

I always have time for a ballad - they're part of my heritage too. I love the fable, the folktale elements in this. You could imagine it being recited and sung down the years in those places which were open to those who don't conform the society's norms. Thank you for this.

On the following Monday, Geoff plodded up a steep slope leading to the remains of Housesteads Roman fort. Yes, indeed about that particular visit, but it's opened up thoughts about thinking more deeply around their relationship. How controlling is he? But we do learn more in subsequent chapters. It's just you giving me more to think about, dugh.

From what little I know, there is an extensive and complex web of issues, emotions, and ties between the two main parties, and also between them and the rest of the family. What can look to be a clear-cut issue to someone on the outside, usually isn't. Been there, done that.

In two cases I know of, it took threats and violence against other close family members before the abused person took action. So, it was tolerable for them to be in that situation (in their mind), but not for others.

Yes... I imagine for a variety of reasons. Trying to hang onto the threads of what was? Is the outward pretence of normality one of her coping mechanisms, or does she fear the consequences if unfiltered sightings are reported back to her husband? Somebody in Felicity's position must be sitting on a roiling cauldron of emotions and fears.

Yes, there's something atavistic, very deep rooted about that feeling. Eric acknowledged in the previous chapter that for once, he took the right fork in the road. Thanks, dugh. Out of curiosity I checked the date I wrote this: November last year. I mentioned to our mutual friend @Carlos Hazday I was getting better at mixing things up. Glad you agree.

It is a very obvious signal. That and obviously not managing to keep clean themselves. For older people, there might be some leeway along the lines of: they can't look after themselves as they should. But it still means the individual won't necessarily get the service others would expect.

Yes, though that might not be as soon as any reader would want. You rightly say, many abused spouses have been cut off from their friends and other family. I wonder if Felicity's husband realises she's meeting Andy? It's a genuine question - something this author hasn't previously considered.

They do. Working with the public, it's part of the silent routine to size up each customer. Yes, Eric's known in his small town but even for them, some smartening up might change their opinion of him. Maybe, maybe not. We'll have to see how it pans out.

You don't have hanging baskets? Though they do take a lot of water, so far from ideal for California. They are a staple in the UK, sometimes in the most inconvenient places, hanging over the pavement. Especially if they've just been watered. Perhaps not something the two lads would go for...

Yes, because Eric already has the suspicion what's on offer is most of his usual weekly shopping trip. I suspect his cross-grained sense of pride will get in the way. Getting round it will be tricky. Because being a guest, he doesn't want to be disruptive. There's the added thing that after a few evenings of drinking it, he'd be too embarrassed to mention it, even if it occurred to him.
