Liam isn't the only one in a difficult situation. Kath is as well. We mostly see her through Liam's eyes, but in her position I'd be unhappy. A husband who is unresponsive and distant, tied up in his own troubles. Neither of them communicate well, and certainly both of them bear the blame for their deteriorating relationship, not just Kath. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

@Timothy M. Thanks for the compliment. No, it's happening very soon after I log in on my laptop, but not on my tablet (which is what I'm using at the moment). It might be a cache thing perhaps, so I'll give that a go.

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a try-out for various themes which had been lurking in my brain for some time. I hope to return to them and write a much longer story in the future. One of the aspects which would get much more time devoted it would be the life of the unnamed Polish man.

As I replied to Mayday, Liam worries about whether he'll see Ryan if he splits from his wife. He's also relieved that he can see Ryan for part of Christmas. Part of the problem is that we don't see Liam interacting with his son. He's only present as a pawn in the disputes between Liam and Kath.

This story is complete - it wouldn't be accepted into the anthology otherwise. However, it has been an experiment with some ideas which have been lurking in my head for some time. In future, I hope to come back to these themes and write a much longer, multi-chaptered story.

@mayday Yes, the conclusion is open-ended. In a way, Liam's thoughts about the Polish man at the end show he's starting to think about other people beyond himself. Would he intervene if the same thing occurred now? The answer is still likely to be 'no' because offering unsolicited help when there's no obvious emergency goes against the grain for a lot of people. Liam is self-absorbed for much of the story, but he still thinks about whether he'd be able to see Ryan, and at the end he's glad about seeing Ryan for at least some of Christmas.

@droughtquake Intense? It's funny, but seeing it from the inside, I don't find it so. It's hardly a light romantic comedy, more a drama with rather more going on than I usually have in my stories. People do live lies. Some survive it better than others, I imagine. How the advent of Grindr and such has affected these kind of lives is something that interests me. I find difficult to decide whether they help or not. Thanks for your usual thought-provoking comments.

Yes, computers are only one facet of what is needed to make Eric feel he's truly part of today's world. A valued human being with purpose in his life. If he uses the computers in the library, they'll be your standard not very up to date desk top models.

@droughtquake Computers in libraries are OK - they're certainly not the newest kit, but speeds are decent enough for people to stream stuff. i think even to see galleries of still images would be a revelation for Eric. Maybe he'll be satisfied with the library computers without wanting his own ...?

It doesn't matter that you don't use all the things on your computer. You're aware that they're available should you need to use them - that's the important thing. Will the teens be back? Who knows?

Not only they need education about using a computer safely. Perhaps the issues are different, but somebody who leaves their passwords at the default, and never uses anti-virus software is also at risk of bad things happening. Perhaps it's tied up with older people somehow being more trusting? They not only need to know how to use a computer, but also need to be aware that the internet is just like the rest of life where care and common sense need to be employed.

There are still a surprisingly large number of people under 65 who are strangers to computers. Educational and societal reasons come into play. And sometimes health issues. You wonder how they manage to live their lives without access to a computer. I'm glad you're still enjoying the story.

As soon as Andy got in the car, he realised it would make more sense for him to go home and order the groceries online. Then he could grab what he needed for Eric's immediate needs and get back within a much shorter time. He didn't like to leave the old man for too long.
