Hmm ... Another one I missed. Each of these three are sad, yes, but bleak is the word that comes to mind the most. The grey, cold, sometimes bitter words are perfect. Uncompromising, uncomfortable, but perfect. This is the stanza which gave me a chill up my spine.

Don't know why I didn't comment on this at the time ... I love the way the silvered chill gradually gives way to warmth, both physical and emotional.

He does indeed. Hope, belief in others, and yes, the idea of redemption are some of the aspects of Parker's writing that make it so memorable. If you haven't read this before, take a deep breath, and give it a go.

Yes, the NHS doesn't get much of a good press, particularly recently. But it is there, free. Which is more than can be said for adult social care services.

I saw the layout of the chapter rather like something you'd see on TV - the various people getting ready before they all met up. Geoff's shirt is real - available from ... somewhere. I can't remember now. And Zoe is fast becoming one of my favourites.

@droughtquake Being poor in a rural / small town situation can be a lot different from being so in a city / urban situation. And if you feel 'different', urban locations offer much more in the way of connections.
