This is a small rural town. Although I never say, I imagine the population to be about 10, 000 - 15,000 - so, not big. Long time residents like Eric become noticed over the years, especially by other people who've lived there for ages. Rumours can start from nothing more than someone's warped imagination. Eric's male, single, never seen to have a romantic partner ... So it moves from him being probably gay to ... Human nature at its best.

I think Andy does realise in theory, but still not in fact. He is still learning though. Eric's position is faced by very many people on limited, fixed incomes.

@droughtquake Don't forget in all this, Andy is still only about three weeks in as a volunteer. I imagine he hasn't quite got into the habit of including visits to Eric in his work calendar. Which, by the way, I imagine to be accessible via any device ... Your other points, I'll answer in the story topic.

OK ... I can now why @Ivor Slipper mentioned you in relation to cliffhangers. All will be resolved next time, and I think that's the only one.

It was nearly lunchtime. Eric had been sitting in the living room for quite a while, waiting for Andy to come and collect him. Andy had agreed to giving him a lift to the supermarket again the last time he'd phoned. Hadn't he? Eric wasn't so sure now. Why hadn't he made a proper note of it? He should've marked it on the calendar. Today. Or was it tomorrow? Today was Monday? He'd made a shopping list out specially, even though he wasn't feeling so good. Every time I re-read this, I am moved to tears. The combination of prose and poetry serves to bring the reader right into the hospital room, next to the author as he tends to a loved one. If you seek depictions of love, courage, and reflections on a shared life, look no further.

Yes, The two young men are as much a part of this story as Eric, so we do need to get to know them rather better.

Thank you! Yes, it is rather by way of compare and contrast ... You don't need to enjoy using a computer, but I'm sure most people realise how much they'd be missing if they didn't have something that connects them to the internet.

@dughlas Eric does use the library already, perhaps more out of habit as so far he's never found anything much to entertain him. Meals on Wheels was a victim of budget cuts quite some time ago, that and concerns about health and safety with the food. The focus is more on lunch clubs, I think, but that would mean Eric being sociable - not really his thing.

@droughtquake I think a lot of people (myself included) expect the convenience of online shopping, yet complain when the physical shops on the High Street fold. For me, it's more about choice than it is about price, and I think that's what attracts Andy to online shopping. He lives in a rural town, admittedly with a small city not too far away, but he will find himself quite restricted in what he can source locally. He does support local food shops, but he's someone with money. Too often buying non-supermarket meat, fish, bread etc can be considerably more expensive than the supermarket. Of course, the supermarkets can artificially distort the market ... No easy answers.
