Andy stretched lazily, like a cat. Then he lay spreadeagled on the bed, the sheet covering only part of his torso. Ahh.... Thank god, it was Saturday. No need to leap out of bed and get dressed in a hurry. He did sometimes have appointments at the weekend, but not today. A broad smile. Not that he could imagine himself leaping or any other violent activity right at that moment. He'd just about managed to take another quick shower, and then it was back to bed. Andy sighed contentedly, the

If you look at the list of topics above, they're all 'live'. Click on the prompt that you responded to and it will take you to the topic. Reply to the topic, include the link to your story, and there you are. Of course, respond to the blog as well, but replying to the prompt's topic is a more permanent way of showing that you've written something.

Hi Ivor, I think the point is if you don't 'reply' to the appropriate topic showing you've used the prompt, then nobody really knows. That's one of the main reasons why the prompts are posted as topics. I don't post there every week but I certainly do once a fortnight.

Eric is one of my favourite characters as well. He did have some support, but it was taken away as the local council had to save money. Something that is happening all the time in the UK.
-
Indeed, something that Eric is allowing himself to realise. Thanks, Puppi.
-
Another thought for volume 2 ... Thanks, drought. A shopping trolley is difficult to manoeuvre onto a bus unless it's a really modern one. Rural buses rarely ever that.
-
@Timothy M. Eric clings onto his independence with all his strength and refuses to allow himself to become dependent on Andy. As far as food choices go ... I imagine Eric to be very set in his ways. This, his lack of funds, and the fact that his homehelp used to do at least some of his coking for him, have meant Eric doesn't think about food for himself. He may watch cookery programmes, but to him, they're as much fiction as any soap.

Thank you for your very kind remarks. This story wasn't started with the idea of making social commentary. Rather, Eric appeared in my head, and writing about him has led me in all kinds of interesting directions.
-
Only because circumstances force him to be, I think. Had he kept his homehelp, he may well have kept on going in his fixed, meaningless ways. Losing that and for once allowing his sexuality into play, have been powerful catalysts. As we've seen, Eric is not well educated, but he has been inquisitive. It's whether Andy can stir that back into life. Thanks, dugh. Your comments always make me think.
-
Well, yes ... But isn't that part of the job of a receptionist? Frontline doorkeeping? Probably doesn't make her a more attractive character, though.
-
Thank you, dear editor. Yes, reading of someone's loneliness and bitter regrets is never easy. I know you like our young couple.
-
Yes, indeed. Social contact of any kind will be good for Eric.
-
The soil may have been lying fallow for a very long time, but it doesn't mean it isn't fertile. Taking down your own barriers can be very daunting. Having other people to start you off is a great help.
-
Yes, breaking the mental habits of a lifetime will take work and application. Eric is at least trying, and his eyes are being gradually opened.
-
But things are slowly looking up for Eric? Maybe you should allow a tinge of hope in there.
-
I spend a lot of time in my characters' heads - I think that's part of what makes it seem so real.

Over The Rainbow • Part VIII
northie commented on Carlos Hazday's story chapter in Over The Rainbow • Part VIII
First, no, you haven't converted me ... but I couldn't resist having a look. Even with only the sketchiest knowledge of the characters, this chapter had me in tears. Well done, my friend. And the reference to skinnydragon was excellently done. -
For anyone who's baffled by drought's comment, see a separate short of mine, Acted Out and his comment there.

Eric was flagging. His feet hurt, and he was so weary. Shopping, in the sense of trailing from place to place, looking for things, was something he hardly ever did. It had been worth it, though. All the getting ready in time, and trying to find his way around. His haul was two shirts, a couple of pairs of trousers, and a cardi. He'd been really lucky. A brief smile of satisfaction crossed over his face. The real prize had been two, two pairs of shoes. Nothing was new, but that didn't bother him.

Thank you! I'm especially glad you enjoyed the musical content. We've only heard a little from Geoff's mum. So maybe, or maybe not.

My writing is far from perfect, but I do the best I can. I am often quite severe with my own work, more so than my editor. Though I recognise when he gives me polite, reserved comments, those are a wake-up call to go back to the text with a machete. If I do get negative comments from other people, my first response is defensive. But then I think, let the comments seep in, and usually I come round to agreeing to the points made. As to 'whiteness'. Yes, my main characters are white. But those that take place in urban locations do have some non-white characters, if only in passing. African heritage, Indian / Pakistani heritage are as far as I've ventured.

Yes ... What's posting now is complete, but there's another volume on the go. Chapter 4 is in process. I'm also writing another long antho entry, one which is needing quite a lot of work. That will probably have to come first. Plus anything else that takes my fancy.
-
Thank you, dear friend. You are there as my backstop and my advisor.
-
Thank you! It suddenly struck me that this was the right spot to stop for a while. They'll be back.
-
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yes, there will be more.
