Currently fighting my way through a response to prompt 671, a challenge to write historical fiction. God, it needs so much research ... And then I've still got to make a story out of it. Increases my admiration enormously for those who write historical fiction.

Thank you! As I posted on the story topic, there's a s!ight delay in their return. Expect them back at the beginning of September (exact date to be confirmed). Both I and my editor have commitments over the summer which would have made an earlier start difficult.

In my experience, most followers click on the follow button and then continue on their merry way. Very few return to look at subsequent posts. Or maybe that's just my blog ...

Short stories are right at the centre of who I am as a writer. I love writing them, whether they're 1500 or 15000 words. I certainly don't regard them as something to be left behind as I progress as a writer. If anything, I regret not having the time to write more. They are wonderful opportunities to experiment, to try out themes and possible main characters. And yes, sometimes I have to be very disciplined in how I write. That's a good thing in my book. In a toss-up between multi-chaptered stories and their stand-alone cousins, I think I would eventually come down on the side of the short story.

When I was writing it, I couldn't decide whether Josh had been home-schooled or not. I didn't have the time to investigate further. Maybe not forestry, but definitely something agrarian ... The course isn't degree level, so he shouldn't have to pay fees. I think ...

Indeed. Just the journey must've been eye-opening. To arrive in a large, diverse city, would've been a shock to his system, if nothing else. And to meet Alex and Connor ...? Josh will return changed. To escape his family will need courage.

And even if he was, somehow, he would have extreme difficulty in making use of them. He would have to alienate himself from his family before he could do so.

Yes, I think he does. Escaping his family will take quite some time and he would be shunned once he did so.
