Thanks, Carlos. I'm pleased my story has grabbed you.

    Tough Love

I'm pleased you see it that way. Adam's actions have received a pretty mixed press so far.

    Expectations

Thank you! Perhaps the only way to go is up?

You'll just have to keep reading, won't you. Thanks, dugh.

Taking time to ask and listen in a neutral environment is what they both needed. And the unaccustomed 'luxury' helps Eric to relax a little. Friends? It's a little early for that, I think.

Yes, indeed. Fortunately they were both prepared to let go of the disastrous first encounter to a great extent.

Yes, they make for really great, friendly places with good, reasonably priced food.

They are - when care and attention is taken over the food, but not so much that it's like a high-end restaurant. This is Eric's first experience of the sadness that his explorations must inevitably bring.

Why not? I imagine most charities / social action programs are always on the lookout for volunteers. And they should train and mentor you (perhaps better than Andy ... )

@droughtquake and @ColumbusGuy You both make very interesting points. A broad brush approach to many things will capture most, but inevitably there are those who get missed, don't fit, get overlooked.

Pride and stubbornness can be useful survival tools, particularly if you live alone. But equally, they can prevent you from accepting help when it's offered. Eric is only starting to learn this.

Yes, indeed. Being open to new thoughts and new experiences is so important. But not that easy sometimes.

Thank you. Andy needs to be a fast learner, doesn't he? From many different points of view.

Or maybe the one short, sharp knock was enough? Thanks for commenting.

Yes, they both tried hard. As for Eric, warmth, good food and pleasant surroundings can work wonders on most people.

To see yourself in my characters is a compliment - it means they're real, and relatable.

Thanks! I'm glad you were convinced - they've both got much to learn though.
  18. Eric woke up with a start. He'd had one of his bad dreams again. It had been some weeks since the last one, but given the dreadful day he'd had yesterday, it probably wasn't surprising. He could taste the leftover fear. As usual, his bedroom was bone-achingly cold. He always worried that his electricity might be cut off. After the amount of money he'd spent over the past couple of days, he'd not turned the central heating on at all. And anyway, he'd been so upset, it had been all he could
  19. I can heartily recommend the C. James short. I'll never have the perseverance for Circumnavigation, but those of his shorts I've read are stunning. Technically, emotionally, and they pack a hell of a punch.

    Three for Jake

That ending hit me in the gut, an echo of the gunshots. A loveable rogue, or hell-raising teen, Jake didn't deserve that.
  21. @Dodger Ordinary mortals like you and me aren't listed in the weekly wrap-up ... Never mind, that's what ambition's there for ... Or something. I read straight past that, without noticing. Typical.

    Close Encounters

Your enjoyment of everything they get up to makes me smile. Tony isn't used to somebody looking out for him. I imagine that his other boyfriends didn't take much interest in his diabetes. That conversation ... well ...

    Close Encounters

The upcoming conversation with his mum is certainly lurking ominously in the background. Not that he's actually arranged it yet ...

    Close Encounters

I suspect there are too many unknowns for Tony to be able to do that. Geoff is going to be much more on his own, having to rely on his sense of how things are going. Not easy for anyone.

    Close Encounters

Tony certainly can't prepare him in the way he did for the job interview. There are too many unknowns. I think it's going be a question of trying to get Geoff into the mindset where he can think logically about how his mother might react to the news. And how he might respond in turn. Not easy.
