I agree with the last reviewer. It was a very mean way to start the chapter. And not very friendly way to end it either.

Every so often I forget the bad jokes in this story... the quick reread is enough to make me groan over them...

This story just zips right along in the early chapters. Jason is more than a little annoying.

I just loved Momma Broman in this chapter.

One of the things that has most impressed me about Don's stories is that he brings religion and faith into them. Gays in general are quick to discard Christianity because of the bigotry of some (but not all) of its adherents. I'm glad to see it because I personally believe that man needs something to believe in other than himself.

Don, this story hooked my interest the first time I read it years ago and it continues to do so now. My perspective has changed quite a lot, I've noticed, but I still like the story. From a technical standpoint, the characters are a bit more archtypical and on this site, the 'rich gay boy' is used a LOT. Some of the newer people reviewing have been harsher than I feel is warranted, for for no other reason than they didn't read far enough. This first chapter was first posted in November of 1999 on Nifty. In the past 13 years, your writing has gone from interesting to deep and compelling. Good start to a great story.

I wholeheartedly agree with Cia's review. Working it Out is one of my favorites. In particular, I think Don does a wonderful job of addressing religion and showing that you can be both gay and Christian. Don also has a great story called Beloved that is currently in process. (careful though, it is already over 540,000 words and still going)

Well said Iarwain. Sidd: I missed this earlier, but this is hardly constructive criticism, in fact, it is a blatant rule violation that if said in the Soapbox would give you a 2 week vacation.

Errr... ummm... dkstories has nearly 3 million words of stories posted and the vast majority of those are either fanfiction, science fiction or fantasy. Most of those have a heavy political thriller type thing going on and little to no typical gay angst stuff. Saying there are none is a stretch. No, the writing here is meant to be read. Literature is written to show how big your dick is when it comes to using big words most people choke on. It is largely unreadable unless you ate a dictionary as a kid.

Howdy Neighbor! (I'm in Rochester too) You're supposed to look up the prof before you sign up for them. And I've always had frustration with subjective 'soft' subjects like English and such. I much prefer objective things like Math and engineering.

My attention was just directed at this post, so I figured I'd weigh in. Your desire seems to be largely similar to the movies out of Hollywood. The ones that make money (blockbusters) are cliched and rehashed. But people spend hundreds of millions watching them, enjoy them and are entertained by them. The 'artsy' films that populate the Academy Awards largely are unheard of and almost always suck, as far as people wanting to pay money to see them. Literature is much the same way. You really have to be an English major to enjoy it, mostly. People largely write cliched stuff online because that is what people respond to, read and like. Do authors sometimes transcend into literary originalness? Sure. But it is rare. Finding someone who has and is also a well loved story is harder. So, my suggestion is you leave the internet writing sites and wander off to your local library and/or bookstore and browse the LBGT section, like Cia suggested.
