  2. thank you! here it is otoño. Centruries ago it was also Fall in uk and changed to fit with European style.
  3. I awoke with a start; for the first time in two weeks, I had had to set my alarm clock. The holidays were truly over. Deciding that I had better continue with my new image as a model student, I shaved, showered and dressed rather more smartly than in the past. As I was leaving, I glanced in the mirror, admired how cute I looked, and left the apartment laughing at my own vanity. The laughter stopped once I realised that I had left without my smart briefcase, a luxurious model, a gift from m

And in grammatical history! Love you excellent explanation. Thank you!
  7. I don’t want to disappoint my dear friend @Summerabbacat, but there Wagner operas that I don’t fully enjoy (ie bore me to tears) but Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde are my desert island discs. Along with a few catchy disco tunes from the 1980’s. Sad, but true!
  8. Beautifully put, much better than I could have said.
  9. Can’t wait even though I’m utterly useless. After reading literally every chapter @Mark Arbour has published on the site at least twice, I didn’t guess he wrote the story about a cruise ship, even though we know he loves going on cruises. Arghhhh But it is so much fun to guess. hope life is treating you well. Xxx
  10. Wiener dogs would have a field day.
  11. The bat is the symbol of Valencia, football club included. They live in the orange groves and we used to see them every dusk surrounding the street lights opposite, feasting on mosquitoes.. for years I was never bitten but market gardeners have been cutting down their orange trees to plant other more profitable crops. Fewer bats around = more mosquito bites for Gary.
  12. Yes, 6 Jan is the feast of the Epiphany, known here as Los Reyes, the three kings. Legend gave them the names. In Many countries presents were given then and not at Christmas. V southern Mediterranean. There are still parades of the kings throwing sweets to kids. They also have ‘pages’ who can deliver the presents to yr door, if you pay enough!

    Star Trek

This used to be used by grammar teachers as the perfect example of a ‘split infinitive’. However, it was probably the main influence on modern English usage abandoning arcane rules. How do these ‘correct’ versions sound? To go boldly or boldly to go. about such things we debated in my grammar school after being glued to the latest episode of the original series. Happy memories.

Many thanks, Mark, for this treat. As one of the dinosaurs on the site, I can remember the two hundredth anniversary being planned by ‘Tricky Dicky’ as he was exploring to see if a third term would be approved…. Then some idiot mentioned tape recordings…. Finally, of course, it was Ford who presided over the celebrations. Anyway, Happy Birthday, to the citizens of a great nation. 🎂
  16. @peter rietbergen, @Summerabbacat and @chris191070, many thanks for your comments. V motivating.
  17. I slowly came to thanks to the delicious aroma of strong, black coffee that was wafting under my nose. I opened my eyes to see a small cup of nectar being placed on the night table. Looking up there was Gerardo smiling down at me, like one of the three kings whom we were celebrating that very day. “Which one are you?” I whispered, “ which of the Three Kings are you?” He laughed as he bent down to kiss me, “It depends, do you want gold, frankincense or myrrh?” “Gold, lots of it, b
