We know he's done nothing wrong because we 'witnessed' in the incident with the zipper. The police, however, haven't, and they have to take child molestation charges seriously. There have been too many child hurt in the past (and current, and almost certainly the future) because accusations of this nature were not taken seriously.

The 'right thing' may be easy to see in hindsight, but when you're in the middle of a situation, it's not always that clear. Alan will do what he can to protect the ones he loves, and that includes Peter, Lisa, and the boys. However, what he does isn't always the best choice. That's part of being human.

Thank you. Since the police haven't arrested Peter (yet), that implies that while they're taking the accusation seriously, they're not automatically accepting the charge. That's the closest thing to common sense I can offer at this stage.

Hindsight is, sadly, wonderful. Alan kept things from Lisa with the best of intentions. A charity view would have the grandparents kidnapping Troy with the best of intentions. What is it said about the road to hell being paved with good intentions?

Is protecting children really a distorted view? They had a suspicion that their grandchildren may be molested, and they took the opportunity to find out if it were true. I can agree that they've gone to extreme measures, but I would like to think I would go to extreme measures to protect my family, too.

Hmmm...lovely double entendre at the end there. Ben's smart enough to work out what Travis is asking him to do As for the other two, I think Ben is right about Bryan, but he's doing his sister an injustice. He should be trying a bit harder to mend fences. The other interesting thing was how Ben was looking to hide in his job. Acting is also hiding for him. It had been implied earlier, but it was much clearer in this chapter. I'm looking forward to what happens next!

It is interesting how many people have suggested contacting a lawyer as the first, or one of the first, things Alan should do. This looks like a cultural thing to me since I personally don't see what a lawyer can do to help the situation. In the future, yes, to get some sort of legal protection to keep the Lyntons away, but at that point in time it's not the sort of thing that would occur to most Australians. Indeed, most Australians wouldn't have easy access to a lawyer at short notice.

Henry Lynton appears to be more levelheaded than his wife, but he's also expressed concern for his grandsons. Penelope Lynton is a rather forceful personality and if she browbeat their lawyer into agreeing with her that what they were doing was legal, Henry would probably have reluctantly agreed. We don't know, though, since it all happened off-camera, but that's one possibility of what could have happened.

I suspect a lot of parents are guilty of the zipper thing when it comes to boys. There's a reason most toddler clothing doesn't include zippers, but once the boys are old enough to dress themselves, the manufacturers include zips because they're easier for the kids. The problem arises when the boys don't want to get dressed and someone else has to do it for them... I wouldn't say the Lyntons have no respect, but rather that they are desperate. They think their grandsons are in danger, and are taking increasingly desperate steps to try to protect them. The fact that their grandsons are in no danger at all is not something that has penetrated their consciousness, and that's the real problem.

Thank you! I should point out that there's not much Helen can do at the moment. Going to Helen won't get Troy back. Helen could arrange for a Child Protection Order to stop the Lyntons from getting access to Troy and Bradley in the future, but the priority should be to get Troy back, not stopping future problems.

There are a lot of options for Alan to follow. We'll see in the next chapter what he does, so you only need to wait a week As an aside, the zipper accident is something I did to my son one day when he wasn't cooperating in getting ready for school, so I know it can happen.

Thank you! The grandparents think that the children are at risk staying with Alan and Peter. I would've thought that taking the kids away (which they first tried to do at the funeral) was a logical step for them to take...

If Craig's parents are on the list of people allowed to take Troy out of school early, then the teacher won't be in trouble. It's certainly plausible to view it as kidnapping, but the mediation session just completed complicates the picture, since access to the kids was a key element being discussed. We didn't get to see the final agreement, but it's possible the Lyntons managed to get some slipped in to give them a loophole for what they've done.
