Because Mickey’s been sheltered by his mother, he is immature and naïve, an easy target for the likes of Sean. I don’t think he really understood love until he suffered the consequences of his infidelity and lost Mark. That’s when he realized his feelings for Mark. And to emphasize his immaturity, he chose self-destruction over trying to work it out with Mark. Hope this helps, mfa. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Same comment as Chris! I would add that that it inspired a rollercoaster of emotions. Several things going on in this chapter, from a lesson on the delivery of British vs. the delivery of American sarcasm to refreshing humor like, “ This is nice… I didn’t realize we’d be driving to Dallas at such a… scenic pace… I mean this is the first time I’ve been able to count the leaves on every tree I’ve passed…” to the turbulent emotional drama at the park and then again in Oliver’s cousin’s small double bed. It was a real whirlwind of a chapter; Oliver, I presume, being the Bad Bishop in this case. Isn’t the bad bishop the bishop that serves no useful purpose in the position? And finally, Oliver offers hope. Thanks, Chessdude. You’re not kidding: over 7,000 words in this chapter! Look forward to more.

Still, It’s one of my favorite sci-fi books (which I read a long before that became an issue). My problem is he never finished the series. Got too big for his britches. The mormons are good programmers, like the JWs and the scientologists. In fact many religions are like that, which is why I shun them all. But, I understand your point.

Rather than viciously picking on Robbie, I think Don’s concern should be why his supposedly straight son’s best friend is flamboyantly gay. Of course that would mean that he would have to face the fact that there may be a crack in his perfect family.
