I knew it! As soon as symptoms started presenting I knew it. I have a friend who little boy has leukemia. Ugh. Yes the recovery rate is high if caught early but a lot can still be unpredictable. . Cody’s story is heartbreaking. I’m so glad he listened to Joey and Andy.

That was the furthest thing from his mind in the moment. Innocent yet ignorant I guess. He should’ve known to get permission and not assume. But I’ll accept your spoiler now. I admit that I probably have a jaded view having been raped at 13 by an older student. I wasn’t triggered by the scene but I saw parallels for sure. Where one side takes no reaction as acceptance, the other side doesn’t. So say for example what if Mack was scared and nervous? Too terrified to react. Many abused kids have this reaction. They don’t want this, but feel like they can’t resist. Does that make it them giving permission? Seduction unfortunately isn’t always accepted. Especially when you use pot and vodka to make me compliant faster. Sadder thing still is that he was hot. He didn’t need to use vodka and weed. I was just scared and nervous. I’d have let him. Alas, that’s not how it played out. From the way the scene was written, how Mack stayed “asleep”, I don’t think we really could tell whether he allowed it from Ollie’s perspective. I mean it’s fine. Ok helluva chapter. I didn’t expect the loud voice to be Joey’s. Andy’s vitals crashing make me think something else is happening because that typically doesn’t happen with concussions. As a former EMT myself l, I’ve seen a few. The conversations with both spirits while knocked out seem to repeat the same message and warning. I have the feeling they’ve got something to do with Jr’s father. Plus, the way Joey handled Jt, may have begun to expose something about Joey that is not yet clear.

Don’t get me wrong..I understand his logic..but..idk..I guess hitting on friends he knows well enough to feel safe on is safer than someone else he doesn’t. Maybe that one time I saw it happen there was more to the story I wasn’t aware of. Maybe it wasn’t his first attempt on this dude and he didn’t take no for an answer. Maybe it made the other snap . Who knows. It definitely is a trial and error thing for sure and yeah you gotta start somewhere..somewhere safe. I guess I’m just more of a more anxious and cautious type from my history. I know I’d lose sleep over this if I were in his spot.

Hmm short chapter. That’s ok. Sometimes they’re necessary. James seems to maybe put a lure in Ollie’s pond to see what bites…maybe. But, I’m still put off by how free Ollie feels towards almost exploiting his friendships with some of his other friends as sexual possibilities. I’ve seen that go way sideways IRL with friends. So sideways the one advanced on took so offense to it they beat up the boy making the advances. Badly. Surprisingly no charges were filed. The teen doing the advancing spent a few days in the hospital for observation. I guess he wouldn’t give the law or his parents a name. Needless to say that friendship disappeared. Ollie might want to be a little more careful. Maybe I’m reading into it wrong or too much. But based on what I saw in my real life experience, this is tracking the same way bc that boy acted the same way…like Ollie doesn’t think they’d take offense to sexual advances at all. Does anyone else see Ollie’s behavior that way?

Nice story so far. Lots of moving parts. I do question how the judge can basically throw his weight around but it’s a small town with a lot of history he is a huge part of it. Anyway, it kept the coals hot and story moving so it’s a minor point. I don’t know why Roger is confused. He should know Andy well enough by now to have figured him out already more than anyone else except the Judge. Again, minor point. Other than that, I’m enjoying it. I’m just across the Hollar so to speak across the Ohio River and near Cincinnati. I bump into folks who hail from the Eastern Kentucky region in the heart of Appalachia. They are some of the toughest folks you’ll ever meet. I don’t know how they do it to be honest. I just don’t l know how they survive year to year. But they do.

Unfortunately I can relate to the beginning of joey’s story as I was deceived by an older student. You related the feelings Joey felt exactly how I felt. I had friends too and slowly became a loner except for ..him. I’ll stop here so I don’t take over this thing but …I’ll say this…Joey’s father is a real sack of shit.

Great chapter. I giggled out loud at “little Mikey”. Too cute. Timmy is either on to Andy or secretly crushing on him and sees how Andy is acting over Joey and is jealous..or at least doesn’t accept gays. Time will tell there I’m sure. Debbie’s warning seems more to me to be about Timmy vs the bully. Perhaps she’s seen or heard it. After all, the fight was in the lunch line and no doubt the rumor mill catches faster than a grass fire in July in the Midwest

When Joey went to use the food tray to block tells me he’s dealt with bullies before. Proud of Andy for serving the bully a knuckle sandwich for his lunch. I have no doubt Joey soaked up all the attention Andy was giving him basically cleaning him up in the bathroom afterwards.. too cute. Also, I really appreciate how you use Andy’s thoughts to monologue his day. I think you have the mentality of 15yo closeted teen boy down pat.
