Two big secrets are indeed waiting to be revealed. Drama is to be expected.๐ฌ > > Interesting discussion going on here. In my country, things are different in that the state funds education for everyone, including at the university level. Nevertheless, children of low-income parents pursue less education than those from well-off families. Thus, social class is often inherited.

@akascrubber Good points about Zdain and how he sometimes feels like an outsider in this group.๐ Letโs see if we hear more about the Redeemers later.
-
Thanks for the comment Good question. I think that in the Middle Ages, the peasants in Europe accepted as a given truth that others were superior โ it was seen almost as the will of God. In more recent times, with the rise of nationalism, the situation changed in some ways: the lord could no longer treat the common people cruelly without consequence โ though of course, it still happened. I think of Danae as a character who sees herself as rebellious and modern, when in fact she still shares much of the old-fashioned thinking of her aunt.๐

Danae Back in Malkania. The realization was both slightly disappointing and intriguing. Danae had barely gotten a glimpse of Andiol before she was already being escorted back to her homeland. Then again, she was not at home in familiar Naldau, but much farther south. This part of Malkania was entirely new to her, and so she looked around with almost as much wonder as her traveling companions. Melgy had shown Danae their location on the map, so she now had a rough idea of where they wer

@VBlew Renn knows exactly how to play this game.๐ฌ If Zdain had revealed his feelings to Josel, things might be differentโor not, since, as you say, Josel doesn't really understand his own jealousy. @drsawzall In stories, secrets like this are usually revealed "at the worst possible time".๐ Let's see what happens. At least, Darren wants to present himself as a childish buffoon to others. We don't know much about his thoughts because he hasn't been a POV character.
-
@akascrubber @Seraph28 You are right. Renn only has evil intentions. Whether he will evolve into someone better remains to be seen, but based on his current actions, it doesn't look likely.๐ In this book series, I've designed so that there are different types of villain. Mocvann, for example, is cruel and thoroughly evil; Rezak is cold and completely callous to others; Vargan is power-hungry and devious, but he doesn't serve the Darkness; and Zdain's father is a total asshole, yet he's still on the side of the good guys.
-
@Seraph28 Thank you for your kind comment. I'm happy to publish this when I have enthusiastic readers like you๐ฅฐ Jozda is a brilliant name! ๐ Josel clearly doesn't like what Renn is doing with Zdain. We'll hear more about how Zdain feels about Renn later.

Danae Andreuz asked, his voice raspy: "How is Anibella?" "She's the same. She's always fussing about, thinking she's a very pious and refined duchess." "Don't you like her?" "I like her very much; she is sweet and usually kind to me. Besides, she's my only relative," Danae said, before quickly adding: "Or is she... Uncle Andreuz?" "You have your mother's eyes," Baron Andreuz Dannkas said quietly. For that truly was his real name. Andreuz was Aunt Anibella's older brother

@drsawzall True. Here's one more little mystery.๐ซฃ

@Seraph28 @akascrubber Thank you for your comments๐ Ragart managed to get Zal from Five Hills safely. Later we'll see if they find Taihan in Afamat ๐ค

That was this chapter. Next time, Josel returns as the narrator. If you need to check any characters or terms, the glossary is there to help: https://gayauthors.org/story/lupus/the-world-of-the-legend-of-the-red-star/2

Ragart Five Hills, Andiol Empire As the night brightened into morning, the situation took a turn for the worse. Ragart had put the still-unconscious Zal in Renn's bed and gone out for a walk. He was reluctant to leave Zal alone, but uncovering the events of the night was essential. Ragart talked to shopkeepers as they opened their stores. He had handed out some coppers to a couple of urchins, sending them to Castle Cache to investigate. It would have been too risky for him to go ther

So true! ๐ There are many more twists to come, all in due course.๐
-
We'll see what happens. There are lots of players in the game, and the stakes are constantly rising.
-
@akascrubber True. Rezak is indeed a cruel man. Yet of all the villains in the story, he is not the worst.
-
@Seraph28 Thank you for your comment๐ We will see later if Dareis and Elyssa ever learn how to treat Venr and Zdain better. As you might have guessed, this contact with the republicans is relevant to the overall plot. On the other hand, Rezak's actions follow the teachings of his mentor, Cors, who was one of the Brotherhood's traitors. This does not bode well for Andiol's future either.๐ฌ
-
Whether or not Rezak and Monteilon succeed in their intrigue is another matter. They are in dangerous territory.๐
-
Rezak Dimalos, Andiol Empire "Sir, my parents... they have arrived," Second Lieutenant Venr Monteilon announced as he entered the office of the commander of the Imperial Army. Rezak Vondau stared coldly ahead, letting the lower-ranking soldier endure the stance for a respectable amount of time. "Very well, order them in," he finally said. He had already given his consent, when the adjutant had asked to introduce his parents to his superior. Second Lieutenant Monteilon had undoub

This was a well-written story that made the reader pause and reflect on life.
-
@VBlew @drsawzall Yes, it might help Zdain if he talked openly with Josel. If he doesn't, it could easily lead to trouble. When we find out what Danae and Andreuz talked about in a few chapters, we will also find out if she is going to reveal her findings to Josel. Danae shouldn't play with the boys' emotions. It could have unfortunate consequences.๐ฌ
-
@akascrubber Right. This can easily turn into a mess.๐ค

Thank you for your kind words.๐ This first chapter was indeed very much focused on group dynamics. I think it is natural that teenagers think more about their relationships with each other than about world events, although they should certainly be concerned about the situation. I'm glad you asked. I'm going to maintain the same publishing schedule, with a new chapter released every Thursday. There may sometimes be a delay due to other commitments, though. But I'll try!โบ๏ธ

FYI: I have now started publishing the third part of the story:

Lullaby-loo. The day grows dim, nighttime whispers, soft and slim. Good little children hurry away, as shadows stretch and dance and sway. Lullaby-loo. It's time for sleep, close your eyes, let dreams run deep. The flare flickers, the hearth-bird sighs, while only a fiend-wing stirs the skies. Lullaby-loo. But hush - beware, for if you peek beyond night's glare, the black-cloaked dreader wakes from rest, to bear you off, a phantom guest. So sleep, sleep, my little one, befo

The young heroes leave Five Hills behind, embarking on a journey to the distant Misty Isles to uncover the red comet's secret. Their guide, the charming yet treacherous Renn Tauganei, harbors dark intentions. Meanwhile, Franz's adventure in Eastern Andiol takes an unexpected turn, the Monteilons seek power in Dimalos, and the vengeful Jolanda makes an irreversible choice. Behind the scenes, Marshal General Vondau weaves his own web of intrigue. In the end, many will realize how weak one person is when the Darkness rises - first it encircles its victims, then it strikes without mercy. The death offered by the Darkness is never easy.
