  1. Except that's wrong. There have been a number of studies on this, but let me point to two. The first one, which said that IQ was reduced by teen smokers, was discredited. Another more widely quoted study, linking casual use to brain changes, was even worse.
  2. And if they busted open your ass, we'd be back to porn.
  3. Obviously, these characters, to some degrees, reflect my own viewpoints. I stated my own attitudes towards Marijuana in 9.11, Chapter 8, as seen through JP's introspection: As far as alcohol consumption, Americans have a strange attitude towards it. We ban it (legally) for those who are under 21, yet it is all but a rite of passage for college students (aged 18 or so), who typically drink excessively (binge drinking). My personal opinion is that this behavior is a result of prohibition (limiting alcohol to age 21 and above) and it results in aberrant behavior for those who drink when they are younger. As with so many things, if the consumption of marijuana and alcohol are done in moderation, they are usually not problematic.
  4. A good estimate of the chance of a woman dying in childbirth was between 6-10% in this era. That does not include a woman with reproductive problems. For a woman like Caroline, the chances would be much much higher. C-Sections were virtually unheard of back then, and the concept of cutting a baby out of a woman's womb, with the lack of sterile instruments used, was pretty horrific.

    Chapter 12

Now that's not fair. Sometimes George is on top of things. (SMILE)

    Chapter 12

There are two parts to this: how George handles Caroline in public, and how his relationship with her is affected. I can't see him doing anything, in the end, that would so damage her as to damage their family. At the same time, I'm not sure I see him forgiving her for this, at least not easily. She slept with his best friend (big problem) and another man (bigger problem) and she was seen in a compromising position with both of them (biggest problem)

    Chapter 12

Good points. Avoiding telling George had got to be the most damaging thing she's done. The other big issue is that she was seen in a compromising position by the servants, and now it is out. George is no saint, but at least he's discreet.

    Chapter 12

Thanks for the review! The irony is that Caroline is really behaving no worse than George, who has certainly has his share of threesomes. The problem for Caroline is that society was much more unwilling in that day and age to accept a woman who would engage in that kind of sexual act.

    Chapter 12

I'm glad you liked the chapter! It's hard to say why Arthur is not around. Then again, he's not the most stable of people under normal circumstances.

    Chapter 12

Thanks! George rarely overlooks a 'hot guy opportunity'. ;-)

    Chapter 12

Thanks! I think we still have to see how Caroline and Cavendish react, so we can try to figure out what it motivating them. It is worth noting, though, that Caroline has been her own person for a long time. George got back from Paris, and suddenly she wasn't on her own, and in charge of everything. That may or may not have contributed to what she did, but it would be perhaps understandable as an act of rebellion.
  12. Thanks for posting this! How exciting for a character to have his own birthday greeting!

    Chapter 12

September 23, 1799 Portsmouth, England The boat pulled up to the dock, and Granger hopped out and then held out his hand to help William. William’s governor and the four footmen followed them. “Jacobs, will you arrange for a post chaise to take Lord Ryde and these other gentlemen back to London?” Granger asked politely, using William’s title. “Certainly, my lord,” Jacobs said. “You will want to arrange for some food for the journey,” Granger sa
  14. No. Riley may be an Irish name, but it wasn't chosen for that purpose. It was chosen because it was close to Raleigh, which is English. Maybe they'll name the baby Alex.

    Chapter 31

Thanks Maarten. I think Brad is ready to start dating, but he's not ready for a relationship.
  16. The takeaway from that was that Will's initial outburst wasn't helpful, but his follow up conversations with Zach were. If ever someone needed to learn restraint and self-control, it's Will. And we're seeing the beginning of that.

    Chapter 31

As was already alluded, it would be very easy to paint Alex Danvers as a villain, but what we've seen of him so far hasn't been evil at all. I think he handled the fling with Robbie (and Brad) pretty well, refusing to go out with Robbie unless Brad was OK with it. And the sale of Anders-Hayes presumably was a good deal for the family, as far as we know. The only thing that points to him to be problematic is Brad's general nervousness of him.

    Chapter 31

Thank you for your review, and for commenting on so many facets of the chapter. You mentioned that Kevin's view of Cody didn't match what we know of Cody. As I said below, we only have Kevin's point of view, and he seems a bit bitter, so it's possible that he's wrong. I wonder if Alex genuinely didn't care about Wade's living situation, or if he was being polite. I suspect it was the former.

    Chapter 31

Kevin featured prominently in Millennium, so that's the story you want to scan to get up to speed on him. I think, in a sense, you're right about Cody.

    Chapter 31

Your theory on Cody has merit, especially the thought that he might have a secret crush, but there is another possibility. We're seeing this through Kevin's eyes, and he's clearly pissed off at Cody, and thus he's jaded. He may not be right. BTW, to clarify, Wade didn't invite Alex to live with him, he invited him to stay with him, which I assume both of them interpreted to mean Alex had a place to stay when he first arrived in the US. Think houseguest, not roommate.

    Chapter 31

Of the three items you mentioned, two of them are significant. :-)

    Chapter 31

Thanks for the review! I think the fact that Jackie doesn't like Kevin, and that Alex doesn't like Kevin, probably are telling about Kevin's influence in Cody's life. They obviously had an acrimonious breakup, but we don't know why. Yet.

    Chapter 31

I'm glad you liked it! It's been quite a while since I've been to London, but I remember that parking was a problem, primarily from hearing people bitch about it. :-)

    Chapter 31

I think Chapter 32 will spark things along. That should post this weekend. I honestly haven't decided what Alex Danvers' deal is. Yet.
